  1. Thanks I thought this might be good since it has so many different foods. I am still trying with fresh fruits and veggies but he still won't try to even taste.
  2. Where do I find red palm oil and what does it look like? I live in western Alberta here in Canada and I asked at the pet store but they didn't seem to know.
  3. Joey is not happy with trying new foods and would rather not so I am having a hard time getting him to eat anything other than pellets. I found a mixed food called Tropical Carnival made by Brown's. Has anyone tried this or use this? I want a healthy diet for Joey and thought I could use this as I still work on him eating new fruits and veggies.
  4. Thanks My hubby is going to put some ropes, we went and bought some interlocking sponge squares to place on the floor. I also found a closer vet so next week I am going to check it out for my 3 little ones. By changing vets it will save travel time by almost 3 hours. I think the first visit I'll just have them do a check up, nails and beak trim. Then I'll see if I feel good about the vet before I choose to continue to them or not. I also was wondering if anyone knows of a good place to look for plans to make a play stand? The one hubby made for our 2 Quakers (Rexley & Molly) seems to be getting torn apart from Joey. Joey likes to chew on everything he can. LOL
  5. I am not sure why Joey is doing it but once he does he walks to where other are and will nibble on their feet. He doesn't want to be picked up but will if you try a few times. I have offered to get him to step up from his cage he says NO then within a minute jumps at the floor. He won't do step up from his cage but once off the cage he is happy to. He likes to then climb to my shoulder and then he won't let me or anyone move him. Joey scares me when he does it as I fear he will get hurt. I will try to make a soft landing for him and see if he will continue. I hope he stops since he already seems to be cage aggressive and him doing this will make it hard when he can fly.
  6. Joey has scared me two time today and it worries me he'll get hurt. He will be on or in his cage with the door open and as you walk by he jumps out. This is not good since I am not even close enough for him to catch. The way his wings are he is also unable to fly so he lands on the floor and I'm afraid he'll get hurt. If this is a game to him or his way to get me to run, he isn't funny. What can I do to stop this?
  7. I'm not sure if this video will post but sure hope so. I'm trying to show off my Joey:)
  8. Thanks, I will try to grab the camera next time to take a few pictures but video is not working for me to post. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong with the video to post but will keep trying
  9. That is so cute thanks for sharing
  10. Today Joey decided he needed a bath so was using his water dish to splash in. Upon seeing this I filled a dish and placed it on my kitchen floor for him to really make a splash. He loved it and I used my hands to splash some too. Joey was making noises and seemed to really enjoy it with his wings spread out. I think he is always full of surprises with what he will do or the noises he makes. I am so happy that he is warming up to all of us and seems to be happy. I am still working on the new foods and I have to be happy he tastes it before it gets tossed.
  11. How can I add a video to show off my Joey?
  12. Thanks so much for all the support and praise but my biggest reward is having all my little ones happy and healthy. They all have come such a long ways from where they were before and I am blessed to have found them
  13. Yes Joey is like a kid, he has a nap then boom full of energy again to play. Hubby bought him a new toy and he almost has it completely torn apart. He sure likes to make all kinds of new sounds too and different voices too. I figured out Joey wants his door open even if he doesn't want to come out and that's when he scratches in the corner to tells us. His chest has many new feathers too but his wings still look like a mess. Joey spreads his wings out now when I spray him and stays in one spot. I think soon I will try to shower him in a sink to see if he'll enjoy it too.
  14. Today I was in my room grabbing the dirty clothes and was missed. Joey was walking down the hall calling out "Hello" my hubby was following behind him laughing. I am so happy Joey is starting to warm up and he looks better too. Joey has about 5 tail feather that are from an inch to 3 inches long. Yuppie he is getting his tail back!
  15. I think you are so right on how animals know when they are being helped. Years ago I found a dog in the ditch That you could see was beat so I took him to the vet and adopted him. The vet was worried about me taking him home since he was a biter and I had small kids but I wouldn't take no for an answer. He became part of the family, was so smart and the best babysitter for our kids. If anyone even raise their voice towards our kids he would be the first to put a stop to it and if one of the kids were sick he'd stay right by them. We had him for over 9 years till he passed away from cancer. The time we had him he never nipped or bit anyone. When I first adopted Rexley and Molly I think my family and friends thought I was in over my head and wouldn't be able to do anything but feed them. They were so wild, mean and even to feed them was a battle with lots of screaming bites. They have taking a lot of time to be where they are today but are not at all the wild Quakers they were then. I am a strong believer that with TLC most animals will turn around to see life can be more than what they have been shown in the past. The sad thing is the people who I got them from had several other types of parrots that all could have used a better home. I just was unable to take more as they were asking to make such a profit for birds that clearly needed help and really had to push to get the two I have.
  16. Before I even thought about adopting I had very little experience with birds. My mom always has budgies, finches, cockatiels, lovebirds and a few other types but all I did was help. I knew how to clip wings, toe nails and feed them but beyond that had to do research. Mom never had a parrot yet always wanted one. I wasn't really planning on getting Rexley & Molly but when I seen how they were living I never even gave the pervious owner much of an option. Molly was almost completely bald and Rexley wasn't much better. All they did was live in a small dirty cage with a nesting box in a room of their own. I knew the moment I saw them that they deserved better and even though I didn't know all I should that I would learn, give them attention and most of all love. They both have come such a long way and continue to strive. They both step up, talk and are part of the family although Molly is a bit of a screamer. They like most foods and will scream to eat some of our meal so you have no choice but to share. I am happy to have them and that's why we have just adopted Joey.
  17. I rescued Rexley and Molly just over 2 years ago and both have made so much progress. They were neglected and used to breed for profit from at least 3 homes before I took them. Now all I expect from them is to be healthy and happy.
  18. I was totally unaware of needing to buy a light and thought it was only used by breeders. How silly I feel now and will now add this to my list of needs to buy the next time I am in the city. I live in a small town so either buy online or make a trip. I am sure being that I live in Alberta, Canada where we get all kinds of weather and with our winter being the longest season that this will be a must. It is so great to have all you here to help me as I have much to learn.
  19. So happy to see all the progress and to have read the story as it unfolds. I Have only had my Joey a few weeks and am loving every minute of it. I also have 2 bonded Quakers (Reley & Molly) that come from a similar situation as your greys. I separated them to work with them and to prevent babies. Rexley being the male has had a lot more progress than Molly. Molly will do most of what Rexley does but not as freely or often. Molly has more fear and aggression. It has taking me now over 2 years of working with them and they still have along ways to go before they'd be like others describe theirs to be. I know they aren't Greys but from the sounds of yours they are alike in some ways. I find that with love, attention and good diet they will be all they can be. Let them decide on the pace to move forward and praise them often. I look forward to following all the progress you and your new feathered friends do.
  20. I am a stay at home mom and that is why I felt I could rescue all that I have. It gives me someone to talk to during the day and keeps me busy too. I think maybe it's still early for Joey to have the trust and to want to step up. Joey still starts to shake even when in the cage and I talk to him. He seems to want the attention but scared to try and let his guard down. I felt so happy today though with a new word he called out "mama" He only said it once but we all heard it clear as I was walking away from the room. I do have a question though. Joey is full of new small fluffy feathers but he is always grooming himself. I find the new fluffy feathers daily at the bottom of the cage and he has some bald spots. Should I worry about it or is some normal?
  21. Trying to work on the step up with treats will not work at this time since he doesn't want to even try new foods. I did get him to step up today about 3 times then he was done with that so I left him to do as he wished. He is coming up with some funny sounds that have us all wondering what he is trying to say. He sounds like a grumpy old man mumbling and has all kinds of new versions of whistles too. I made him an egg today and he did try some but I have to sprinkle some pellets on to get him to try. My dog (Maggie) gets confused as Joey does the whistle we use to call her so Maggie looks at us as if what do I do. Joey has a few new tail feathers coming in now too so in time he will have a tail again.
  22. Welcome to the forum Miranda, I am new too and only had my little Joey a few weeks so we'll be learning together. Here on the forum there are so many willing to help and so much we can read to help as well. How old is your little guy and have you named him yet? It is always nice to see pictures and learn how each one has their own personality. I think my little Joey will be teaching me more than I teach him for the moment.

  24. He is 13 months old now and I have had him for a few weeks now. I have no idea what he was or wasn't taught since he is a rescue. When I got him he was looking very neglected. I was told he fell in knee deep snow and heard part of a story about a dog playing with him. I have some pictures on my profile. I am still working on trust with him as he has had such a bad start from the person who had him before. He acts like he wants to have a head scratch or step up then changes his mind. Although he has let me several times on his terms. I am also working on his diet as the pervious owner said he just eats pellets. I just find it hard to let him out when its a battle to get him to go back in. Joey likes to be talked to and will say hello now.
  25. Once Joey decides to come out of his cage I am having a very hard time getting him back in. He won't step up, growls, hisses and goes to bite. He will try new foods as long as I mix a few pellets in but won't take it from my hand. He seems nervous when I try to get him to step up as he shakes for touch or even at times when we talk to him. The last thing I want to do is scare him or put fear out there but his bite is not always soft. Is there a way to show him step up is safe and ok without a battle? Other wise he is making all kinds of new sounds, eating more and has many new small feathers growing.
