I will be gone for two days is that ok to leave a grey home?
MKparrot replied to JanMarie's topic in The GREY Lounge
I agree with Talon. Leave your parrot at home. Provide plenty of food and, what is more important, water. If there is any hanging toy on chains or laces in the cage that parrot may entangled in- remove that toy. Leave TV or radio turned on, but use timer that will turn off/on the device in appropriate time (your parrot should have a regular sleep). -
...and cabbage is to be avoided due to intestinal problems that cause to the birds.

I will slightly disagree that lettuce leafs are not valuable for the birds. There are many varieties of the lettuce, but most popular varieties grown around the globe are: - Butter-head, with loose heads; it has a buttery texture. Butter head cultivars are most popular and widely grown in Europe . - Chinese variety generally have long, tapering, non-head forming, strong-flavored leaves unlike its Western counterparts. - Crisp-head variety forms tight, dense heads that resemble cabbage. Cultivars of the crisp head are the most familiar type used in the USA (I believe so). - Loose-leaf variety features tender, delicate and fully flavored leaves with a loose bunch. This group includes green oak leaf, red oak leaf, valeria and lolla-rosa-types. - Romaine-lettuce grows in a long head of sturdy leaves with a firm rib almost reaching to the tip of the leaf. Cultivars of Romaine are also the most popular types in the USA. - Summer Crisp variety forms moderately dense heads with a crunchy texture; this type is intermediate between crisp-head and loose-leaf types. a) Lettuce leaves are one of the very low calorie green-vegetables. 100 g fresh greens provide just 15 calories. Nonetheless, they are the store house of many phyto-nutrients that have health promoting and disease prevention properties. b) Vitamins in lettuce are plentiful. Fresh leaves are an excellent source of several Vitamin A and beta carotenes. Just 100 g of fresh, raw-lettuce provides 247% of daily vitamin A, and 4443 µg of beta-carotene (Carotenes convert to vitamin A in the body; 2 µg of carotene is considered equivalent to 1 IU of vitamin A). These compounds have antioxidant properties. Vitamin A is required for maintaining healthy mucus membranes and skin, and is also essential for vision. c) It is a rich source of vitamin K. Vitamin K has a potential role in the bone metabolism where it thought to increase bone mass by promoting osteotrophic activity in the bone cells. d) Fresh leaves contain good amounts folates and vitamin C. Vitamin C is a powerful natural antioxidant; regular consumption of foods rich in vitamin C helps the body develop resistance against infectious agents and scavenge harmful, pro-inflammatory free radicals. e) Zea-xanthin (1730 µg per 100 g), an important dietary carotenoid in lettuce, is selectively absorbed into the retinal macula lutea. f) It also contains good amounts of minerals like iron, calcium, magnesium, and potassium, which are very essential for body metabolism. Potassium is an important component of cell and body fluids that helps controlling heart rate. Copper is required in the production of red blood cells. Iron is essential for red blood cell formation. g) It is rich in B-complex group of vitamins like thiamin, vitamin B-6 (pyridoxine), riboflavin. So, as far as I am aware Your Grey can enjoy lettuce. It will not make any harm and is good for bird’s health, no matter lettuce is considered low-calorie vegetable. Lettuce can’t give your bird energy but can provide parrot’s body with vitamins and minerals that are important for vitality and long living.

Nearest Walmart is around the corner "just" 2094 km away from you. You just have to "jump" to London, UK. :D..... But for serious, you can easily find Aloe Vera Juice in any supermarket in Belgrade in the "health food" department or in Bio-food stores. At least it is so in Skopje, Macedonia.

The Bird Did It: Share Real Stories, Lay People Won't Believe
MKparrot replied to FirstPenguin's topic in The GREY Lounge
My twin daughters were jointly preparing for a school test and were cross-questioning one another for few questions in a row. When one of them completed her firs answer, my CAG Poly said: "Correct! Next please?" -
OMG, what a wonderful flock you have there!!!!! Welcome to the forum!!!!!!

I've posted yesterday evening (09:47 PM Macedonian time- GMT +1) that it is a fool moon and to consider the possibility that parrots may bite due to the moon phase. Now, I am serious.... this morning Poly was out of the cage waiting for me to give him fresh water and food. When I ask him to step on my hand to bring him back in the cage to eat, he bite me twice. It was fast and hard. I used the whole "no, no" routine and tried to take him to the cage with my other arm and he bite me there too. So I got 3 bleeding wounds. There was no warning body language, no signs... It was all the same during the last fool moon when I have posted the thread about fool moon influence on parrot biting. For me it is confirmed - my CAG bites during the fool moon phase. Next time I will try to record this on camera.

IT IS FOOL MOON TONIGHT. PARROTS TURNS INTO WERE-WOLFS AND BITE!!! BEWARE OF PARROT BITING THESE 2-3 DAYS The Full Moon influences the psyche of animals with noticeable intensity. Veterinary staff and Animal Control keep busy during this phase. When an animal is upset during the Full Moon they tend to be restless. Dogs and wolves are known to howl during the Full Moon phases, while birds become agitated and become disoriented. Cats hide. The Full Moon tends to rattle both humans and our pets' emotions. Just to remind you to watch your parrots next 2 days and to see if they are more nervous with no obvious reason and, of course, if they bite. Of course, in case some of you are curious about this.

Don't worry about his cold feet. Sometimes they get cold even if it is warm in the room depending if the parrot is on the stand or on the cage. Foot position and use of foot strength to grip and balance are very dependable on the blood circulation. More blood means more oxygen = more energy in his feet. Energy burning increase the temperature. So, sometimes if he stands steel and is no active but firmly gripped (especially on cage bars, cage door edge or on inappropriate (thick) stand perch) his feet may get cold because of obstructed blood circulation in the feet due to unnatural feet position while griping. You are not a fist time parrot owner so for sure you know - just keep him away from draft.

How did you choose the name of your parrots?
MKparrot replied to MKparrot's topic in The GREY Lounge
Than Cockey/Koki is actually Kosta or Kostadin? Just kidding... Cockey sounds fine and unique for a bird. I can't remember I've heard of a bird of that name. And the name issue WAS NOT COINCIDENCE BUT PREMEDITATION FOR SURE. Cockey was meant to be yours and so the name fits the bird even more. -

Ana Grey!!! I like it. It sounds almost "Hollywood romantic like" to me. -
Yes it was quite an experience indeed.

He was 4 weeks old and I was feeding him with baby parrot formula, every few hours, mixing and shaking, feeding, cleaning, warming and all the repetitive stuff on the hourly basis. It was funny:) and not difficult at all. He switched onto seeds and fresh food smoothly and with no problems and now he is smart, happy, dynamic and talkative "beast".

I wonder how did you choose the name of your parrots? My CAG was named Poly long before he was hatched. My first parrot ever (a budgie), some 38 years ago was named Poly because it was probably most common parrot name in the cartoons, movies and comics. I even researched why it is so and what is the meaning of the name. It turns it is shorten from Polynesia. For me it was kind of childish warm feeling choosing Poly name again. I think that when (if) I will get my second bird I will most probably name it Poly the Second or Poly JR What is your "excuse" for choosing your parrot's name?
-
No, not DNA tested yet but I am thinking of Poly as of "him". Will test "him" soon I believe. I am not sure, but I think it costs around 40 Euros. I really do not think it will make any difference to me, but it is OK to know if you are spoiling boy or a girl
-
Yeah, for me, Poly is "referent standard name" for a parrot I don't know what I will do when (if) I will get Green winged Macaw (that I am considering for some time). Maybe Poly the Second or Poly JR will be in order:) By the way, can you recommend me a breeder for a Macaw from Serbia?
-
Yes Grey is GreYt!!! My CAG Poly is actually serbian :-) . I've got him from a breeder from Vojvodina (not sure what is the name of the village). So, you got Cookie from Sasha Krnjeta, right?

Zdravo Grumpy!!!!! Hi grumpy!!!! Sorry everybody, can't resist to say "Hi" to my neighbor with Serbian and Macedonian common phrase. -
Zdravo Belgrad. Pozdrav od Skopje. Hi Belgrade, greetings from Skopje Macedonia. I am also new on this forum and can tell you that forum members are GREAT. I have never seen such a dedication and positive energy regarding the CAGs on one place. Your bird is nice and obviously well tamed. Where did you get it, from the pet shop of from the breeder?

I'm off to pick up my new Grey Parrot! Am very excited!
MKparrot replied to shane's topic in The GREY Lounge
Congratulation, Scarlet is beautiful. Your excitement make me remember how excited I was 3 years ago when I got my CAG Poly....and still I am :-) -
My parrot really likes broccoli, carrots, cabbage, peas, peppers and pumpkin and I give him these foods on a regular basis. He also eat a lot of grape and cherries but does not like spinach at all. Can you recommend any beta carotene supplement in addition to food in order to speed up the process of nail recovery?
