  1. I'd be concerned, too. Do you have air purifiers? That might help in the interim. Have you tried calling your avian vet's office to see what their spin is on this type of exposure?

  2. Hi everyone, I feel like I am always popping in here only when there is an urgent reason...I apologize. Last night, Poppy flew down stairs and into a wall or door. When we got her upstairs, there was blood dripping from inside her mouth. It did stop but I cannot tell where it was coming from. All day today she has been lethargic and seems to not be able to move around her cage as easily because she just stays on the perch we put her on. I offered her water but she didn't want any, even after eating a good amount of peanut butter and not having any all day. She ate a tiny bit of oatmeal and that is it other than the peanut butter (her favorite). I am worried but am hoping she is just sore and will recover without a massive vet bill. Thoughts?

  3. What a cutie. You've got a great cage set up, and I see you've got some cardboard on the play top. You might want to add more shredding toys. My guy loves adding machine paper tape and toys made of toilet paper rolls.

  4. Look up something called Rescue Remedy. At least a couple people here have had good results with it. My Dorian was cage bound when I got him and it took more than a year of sitting by his cage with the door open before he even poked his head out.

  5. Could be a concussion. I don't know if you're on Facebook, but there's a group on there called Parrot First Aid. They're excellent at giving first aid advice. Might be worth joining and asking them. I know with a concussion you don't treat with heat because that can cause additional swelling, but that's about all I can remember.

  6. Hi everyone! It’s been awhile, I know! I just found out our rental has asbestos in the floor after a refrigerator leak and am concerned about the birds’ health. It will be removed and my birds are in my bedroom now but is it dangerous for them to be here?

  7. Sounds like they did the remediation the right way. You and the birds will be fine.

  9. I didn't receive notification of these responses so I am just now seeing them. They completely sealed off the room (bird were in my bedroom with the door shut), had negative air going, and wet the floor down really well before tearing up the old vinyl to prevent it from going airborne.

  11. I'm no expert on this but many years ago I worked for a school district. There is a lot of asbestos in the old buildings. The key was always whether the asbestos was "friable" (I think that was the term). If it was painted over or contained in a sealed product, it was considered safe as no particles were entering the air. If it wasn't completely covered or contained it was friable and could be air born. I'm not sure this helps, but thought I'd volunteer what I know. Another example... we have a very old boiler in our house which has an asbestos covering. The asbestos is covered by another cover. According to the heating people, it is no problem as is. If we ever need to remove it, that's another story.
