  2. Congratulations on your new baby! And may I be one of the first to welcome you to Grey Forums! The behavior you have described is actually a loving gesture of his wanting to share his food with you. Sounds like he's warming up quickly to you, which is great! I'm not sure what your plans are with his cage, but my recommendation is that when you're able, to get him something bigger. Greys love space to play, flap their wings, swing, etc. etc. This particular cage is actually intended for much smaller birds. Again, welcome to the forum, and keep on posting!

  3. Hello everybody. Nice to find so many people in the forum! I am new Grey owner; I got my new friend just two days ago. He is around one year old and his name is Riko. Previously a kid used to have him, but now he moved abroad to study and the parents couldn't keep him, so they had to sell him. I must admit, I am bit surprised with that bird. I think I was more scared than him when I first brought him at home. Ι was hesitant to bring him out of the cage, not to mention to feed him. But straight away, he took seed from my fingers. I opened the door, he came out and sit on top of the cage. Today I noticed when I approach him to the cage, we comes close to me and makes some weird sounds like puffing and blowing, opens his wings, moves his head up donw and he pretensed he bites my fingers, but although my finger goes in his mouth almost completely, he does not apply pressure at all. Also I noticed that during these weird moves, sometimes he is regurgitating some seeds. Is all this normal to be so easy going straight from the beginning? Could you explain this weird behaviour when I go close to the cage - is it normal or should I get worried? I forgot to mention that I keep him in the same big cage he used to be before. I am planning to go to the vet tomorrow maybe for a basic check up cause the kid didnt give me any info about his health - any advice what to check? I attach a picture of him. It seems he is sleeping on the cage, though he is talking like hell (while sleeping?) :-) Thank you all in advance. Glad to join the group!

  6. Hi guys. Thanks for the welcome messages and your advises. I had the same interpretation of his behaviour after some online search but I could not be sure since I am completely new with Greys. I didn't expect he would be so friendly straight away, but yes it seems so. So, I will try to discourage him when he starts with this "love" dance :-) However, he still wont stand on my hand - this will may take some time I know. I took the same cage he used to be cause I thought the less changes in the new environment the less stress for him in the beginning. But I will consider a new bigger cage as well, although he seems to enjoy staying on top of it most of the time. Yesterday I noticed something funny: he stays on top with closed eyes standing on one leg (as you see in the picture) pretending he is sleeping, but then he starts mumbling and whistling continuously; it is really hilarious. Anyway, thanks again. You were really helpful. I will drop some updates from time to time.

  7. Hello Alex and welcome to our family. It appears he is in love with you, he is showing his desire to mate with you and that should be discouraged as it will only frustrate him, when he gets like that ignore him for a few minutes and do not touch him beyond the head.

  19. I don't have time for details. (4) birds: a "love" bird (poorly chosen name), male Alexandrine (bought as a baby), naked male Eclectus (rescue), and our newly rescued female CAG. (2) dogs (rescues): 4 year old 85 lb male pit bull (dumb as a box of rocks!), and a 4 year old chihuahua/rat terrier mix (runs the house). (2) cats (rescues). The female is a demanding beotch, you can do anything to the male. Reptiles: (2) ball pythons, (4) boas, (1) hog nose snake, (1) sand boa. Most are lost cost paid rescues. (1) bearded dragon (that defies Father Time). (1) female cuban rock iguana. Very rare. Chillest iguana ever. Had (4) cubans at one time. (1) crested gecko, missing it's tail. It is what it is. Who knows what else... We've had many more snakes. Rescued 9 once. Had 4 or 5 tegus. And many other critters over the years. We've cut back as the kids got older.

  20. She does ring a bell on a toy once in a while. And grabs one toy to bang it against her water bowl. That's about it. I added squares of cardboard to one toy. She was initially afraid of it, now she ignores it. Everything I've given her was to chew on, instead of herself. She has popped a few main wing and tail feathers, which are chewed on the ends. I've never seen a feather (other than down) on the floor of the cage. That's a good thing. She's got a long way to go! I'm hoping the breeding behavior ends soon, and she still likes me afterward. If I had a voice activated recorder I could document her vocabulary, which seems to grow every day. Not just random words, whole sentences!

  21. Timber doesn't care much for toys either. He gets past fear, but doesn't have much interest. The things he actually likes are his bells (stainless steel is safe), his stainless steel measuring spoons (they are all on a ring so they rattle), and his forage ball because it has Healthy Bits in it. Other than that, he prefers cardboard to chew on, and not in the form of a toy. More like a box I receive from Amazon with the tape pulled off. They can certainly tell a story with the vocabulary they know. I think you are making good progress. They are sooooo sloowwww to accept and change Grey time!

  22. I should mention the new toys that she was originally afraid of are in her cage and she's OK with them. She doesn't touch any of her toys though. :?( She continues to very randomly step up. 90% of the time she forcibly pushes my finger up to her head for scratches. Sometimes she lightly bites my fingers to redirect me. If she takes it too far I close the door and walk away. Mostly, she steps up to get closer to me for he mating dance. Mostly in the morning. Although she must have some interest in coming out of her cage. But she's usually very scared when I take her out, looking for things to eat her. I can see it in her eyes and feel it in her grip. I'll sometimes slowly walk her around the room. Hopefully she'll get it soon. I can't take her to the bird meeting in September if she's this scared of everything outside her cage. She must have never been taken out. I can tell by the things she's been saying lately that her former owners where not happy with her. She's been telling her story. I've been tempted to text the guy, but that would probably just piss him off. He "wanted it gone". If I could only get her to understand "good bird step up", which is what I say when I take one of the other birds out and show her that they like to step up. She obviously has her own priorities!!

  23. Wow, has she really opened up vocally!!! All kinds of stuff coming out of her mouth the last few days!! Including stuff she had to have picked up before we got her. "stop. Stop. STOP!!!" And, all of the sudden it's quite up there. Hmmm.... I better check.
