Heck I would have been mad too. I don't let any strangers touch my Emma without permission. When they ask me if she will bite.. I always say YES!!!

Post edited by: lovethatgrey, at: 2009/08/02 01:25

I strongly suggest that you consult with your avian vet to find out whether what you are doing is safe for your parrot.
-
Thanks Caitlin. I'd like to try it out and really do feel that this will be a good idea for Emma and Sachi.

I'm very curious about Clicker training and wonder if any of you have any experience with it. All feedback appreciated. Check out this very smart Cockatiel.

Someone on another parrot forum informed us that her 17 year old female blue and gold macaw lay an egg for the first time recently.:ohmy: Pretty much reminded me that with a female parrot one is never out of the woods when it comes to egg laying. The other matter that I was wondering about is why is it that parrots have such a long life expectancy compared to the other pets that are kept in homes. :silly: I'm not sure but I do think that turtles live long too. Especially if they are cared for properly.

Post edited by: lovethatgrey, at: 2009/08/01 03:16

Hello - Happy to belong to the forum
lovethatgrey replied to CongoMongo's topic in Welcome & Introduction Room
Welcome aboard Congo Mongo. -
That's wonderful that she said those words.

I certainly hope he will be alright and of course you too. I cannot imagine how you must be feeling right now. I know it won't be very easy but {Feel-good-00020114}try your best to enjoy your vacation and keep in touch with your vet.

Today we took Sachi and Emma to the park. We noticed at one point that they were both looking up in the sky. We looked up to see what they were so focused on but didn't see anything. About 30 seconds later we heard a plane fly over. All of that time they were looking at the plane but we couldn't see it with our simple human eyesight. I thought that was pretty amazing. {Feel-good-00020114}It would be interesting to measure how far they can really see To bad they don't put it to good use and help us look for items we seem to have misplaced. Sometimes I'll ask Emma is she can see my car keys as if she will be able to respond.:blush:

Thanks Judygram. I am very happy with my Emma but to tell you the truth.. I was really expecting and prepared for a parrot like your lovely Josey.{Feel-good-00020114}

An example of why Quarantine is IMPORTANT!
lovethatgrey replied to lovethatgrey's topic in Health Room
In that case, I hope all people with multiple parrots:) make the time and effort to quarantine properly. That is all. -
I haven't been a member on this forum for that long but I've never noticed anyone discussing or mentioning the importance of quarantine when introducing a new parrot to your flock. It's a bit perplexing. Anyways .. here's a story to share. Perhaps it will help someone's parrot. http://www.ellen-parrots.com/frames-pbfd.html

I can only add that that your parrot will need a lot of time, respect, patience, gentleness, encouragement and compassion. Always respect their comfort level and don't be pushy, aggressive or domineering. I think the upside of getting and older parrot is that you can gage their personality better than if you were to get a baby. My 17 month old african grey is definitely very different today than how she was at 10 weeks old. Kind of like what you see is what you get. Very often people are so enamored with their baby parrots who tend to be much more submissive and cuddly than a grown up parrot. They expect the parrot to always remain so docile. Unfortunately these people always become disillusioned very quickly because reality always has a way of kicking in. When the baby parrot becomes older parronts who did not do their homework often blame the parrot for having behaviour problems and give up on them rather than work with them. it is my opinion that if a parrot is a great pet, it does not happen by sheer coincidence. It occurs with a lot of continuous work and effort.{Feel-good-00020114} Post edited by: lovethatgrey, at: 2009/07/26 21:41

Post edited by: lovethatgrey, at: 2009/07/26 21:42

how to know what is the best pellet food
lovethatgrey replied to justalady721's topic in Health Room
I use Harrison's and Roudybush but I don't think that there is such thing as a "perfect or best pellet." It's important to provide vegetables, fruits, and raw natural nuts as well. I also provide organic oatmeal and homemade Mash on a weekly basis. -
Congratulations on your new addition! Does he or she have a name yet?{Feel-good-00020114}

Ahh... Thanks guys. Purchasing an already bent spoon would be alot simpler than purchasing scary looking pliers to bend them with.

That is a very sweet poem.

Congrats!! You will be SO busy soon.{Feel-good-00020114}

Hey Welcome aboard Vanessa. Nice to see you on here too.

I definitely redirect. Especially if I am able to realize early on what is about to happen. :sick: I understand on an intellectual level that it is a compliment but frankly I would prefer that she keep her nutrition inside of her and I don't want her to ever consider me as good "mate" material. When she seems to be getting all lovey on me...I pretend to not notice and I'll point to one of her toys and say something like - Hey what a great toy!

Post edited by: lovethatgrey, at: 2009/07/26 04:51

Yuck! I was grossed out! I had to turn away and was scared to look back at Emma in case she wasn't done. :sick:

Post edited by: lovethatgrey, at: 2009/07/26 03:59

more than one parrot… Would you describe your African grey or one of your African greys as your extroverted wild one? It dawned on me today that this is how I feel about Emma. She is such a DRAMA princess, pretty fearless and very often jumps with two feet in and throws caution to the wind. Today as I was in the kitchen washing dishes, she was in the computer room on her Atom listening to her “children’s CD. As she was listening to each song she howled along and squealed at the top of her lungs yelling out “Be careful, Be careful†while hanging upside down on her Atom with only one foot. Truthfully, I'm not sure if I would have been drawn to her if I had met her for the FIRST time today. I'd probably imagine that she was just too much for me to handle. Then there's that part of me that feels that I must take responsibility for how she is today. Who else can I blame? It's so weird ... when I met her at 10 weeks old - I was told that she was so timid and a bit of a scaredy cat always hiding and following her sister who hatched a few hours before her. Well let me tell you... that changed pretty rapidly after she met me because I visited her every single day until she weaned. Her sister would receive visits once a week or once every two weeks. Emma took a bloody long time to wean also. A whole 23 weeks! I felt pretty sad for her sister. I may have purchased both of them if her sister had not already been sold. Anyways, Emma is also a smart ass.:blush: Today we had a conversation that went like this. Emma: I love you! I love you SO much Me: Really? Emma: No not really. How about a scratchie? Me: I just gave you a scratchie. Emma: That’s right! Good Job! How about a scratchie? I’m not complaining about my Emma but as a first time African grey owner, I have a lot to learn. Sometimes I feel that having an African grey seems similar to having a “special needs childâ€. No two are alike and each can blossom in to someone you least expect them to be if given the chance. I guess after all of my reading about african greys I still don't know what to make of Emma. This is why I am sharing.:blush: Post edited by: lovethatgrey, at: 2009/07/26 03:32 Post edited by: lovethatgrey, at: 2009/07/26 03:33 Post edited by: lovethatgrey, at: 2009/07/26 03:34 Post edited by: lovethatgrey, at: 2009/07/26 03:35 Post edited by: lovethatgrey, at: 2009/07/26 03:36 Post edited by: lovethatgrey, at: 2009/07/26 03:38 Post edited by: lovethatgrey, at: 2009/07/26 03:40

Post edited by: lovethatgrey, at: 2009/07/26 03:44
