Bikermol
Hi guys. This is Charlies 4th day here. Im still trawling the site for insights!! ha ha, on posible troubles that may arise introducing a new grey & 8 yrs old, at that. A lot of threads speak of loads of time needed for the new bird to settle, & your "old" bird to get aquainted. Well, so far, everything is great. At this very moment they are together on "Charlies" playstand eating grass and assorted flowers from the garden ( Cultivated just for them!). There has been no arguments, Charlie is a bit to foward for Harry, wanting skitches from him, which he doesnt do until properly introduced, but accepting when he dosnt. Harry is trying to teach Charlie to fly, launching from the same perch, circling the room landing beside Charlie, doing it again. Charlie managed to fly from the conservatory to the kitchen this morning. As for the humans, there is no animosity, some crossed signals, and mis-understandings, but we are teaching each other. That even after I plucked feathers from his chest yesterday for the DNA test. I am posting this because I think it is because both parrots are socialised. Charlie & Harry wear harnesses and regularly go out and meet people. Maybe we do not have to worry when they go from us, Harry will outlive me, that it need be so traumatic if they are well used to other people and places. BaxtersMom
Not all rehomed birds are problems or have problems, although some of them do. I think Alot of it has to do with the person who is taking them in and understanding them and their needs and the situations they come out of. Me and Baxter hit it off great from the start and he was a pretty neglected grey but he is living the life of Riley right now:P I love him so much:kiss:
she
That is brilliant.I too think it helps a lot if they are socialised . Charlie is doing well with his flight practice. He will soon give Harry a run for his money.I am so pleased all is going so well
Luvparrots
So glad everything is going well with Charlie. Can't wait to hear whether Charlie is male or female!! It is a blessing Charlie and Harry get along, congratulations!!!
Lyric
I think you are lucky the two hit it off so well right off the bat. I am a bit envious as my two don't get along (one is scared of the other) and it certainly causes some dilemnas for me as only one can be out of the cage at a time. It must be quite a sight to watch Harry giving Charlie his flight lessons! Enjoy the time with the two of them and keep us updated on how things progress. Tycos_mom
Your so lucky to have found such a well socialized Grey It very true that some rehomed Greys take a long time to adjust. It all depends on what there previous home was like, how many times they have been rehomed, and of course the age of the Grey. Tyco was 4yrs old when I got her she had been rehomed 3 time and was totally neglegted with her previous owner. So she had no social skills or anything when she came to me just allot of bagage to work through, It took me 7 months to get her to where she is which I think is a very shourt time concidering what her life was like before I took her in. She steps up, she allows me to give her scritches and kisses she eats everything I give her she loves her pellets. I think all and all she is a pretty good bird now. she still has a few minor things to work out bt everyday she gets better and better. What I'm saying here is not all rehomed parrots are going to be a problem some will fit into their new homes like they have always been there. Char
I have heard so much about how hard it is on a bird to rehome it but this Cockatoo I have rescued does not seem to be fazed at all. I can't tell she misses her former home at all. Apparently Charlie is not having any problems either.
