Can't fly!

Bikermol

Recommended Posts

Hi I have picked up an 8yr old grey. The seller said he can't fly, but I thought he would in a strange place. However, he realy can't!

He climbs up high, and then flaps like mad, but nothing happens. My other grey was flying around the conservatory and he seemed desperate to join him, but still wouldn't let go. And no he does have all his wing feathers. what can I do.

By the way, probably because he cant fly he is MEGA friedly, and not afraid of my place, dogs, husband(the real test).

Congratulations on your new grey, Bikermol. What is his name? Perhaps with a little practicing he will be able to fly. Regardless, I know you will be a great parront to him and he will be very happy in his new forever home. Can't wait to see some pictures of your new grey; exactly can't wait to see both of your fids!!!! Karma to you for taking in an older grey!!!

The owner, seller, said she has had the bird 7 years, and he has never flown. However, she also advertised him as a TAG, and he is a small Congo. I have great difficulty uploading pics on your site. Would LOVE to show you pics of Harry on our travels.

On one occation he had his harness on three times! He loves the pond section in garden centers. One had an aviary, loads of cockatiels, and 4 Indian ringnecks. Puffed up his feathers at ths cockatiels, but backed away form the ringnecks.

Just had a thought If, Oh his name is Charlie, Can't fly, he wont need a harness!!

Congrats on your new grey Bikermol! Thats great that he is adjusting to your home so well! If he doesn't have his flight feathers in then there is nothing you can do about him flying, you just gotta wait for them to grow in and that does take some time. What did you name him? Do you have any pictures?? You know we loove pictures ;)

If you get an account at www.photobucket.com and upload the pictures onto there, you can resize and edit them and paste the IMG code onto here. Its real simple, you should give it a try ;)

Charlie is a great name! So now you have two greys? A congo and a timneh? Have you introduced them yet?<br><br>Post edited by: caitb2007, at: 2009/06/02 22:29

Congratulations on your new grey!

By coincidence, I also have a grey called Charlie who cant fly:( My poor baby lost his flights in an earthquake and also lost all his confidence. He knows he is different to my other two greys, he uses body language and I can tell when he wants moving somewhere.

Given time and practice, your Charlie may fly again especially watching your other grey.

Just wanted to say, my Grandparents used to live in Kilmarnock and we spent many a clear morning looking over at your beautiful Scottish Island:)

Enjoy Charlie, he sounds wonderful.

Harry is a Timgo. When I took Charlie out from his carrier, he looked around uncertainly, didnt want to step on the playstand. Harry flew on my shoulder and looked at Charlie. Charlie started climbing up to my shoulder. Harry met him half way and they slapped besks! I thought Harry would be too nervous to come so close so soon, (10 minuets).

Later this afternoon, Charlie was flapping maddly, and Harry flew over twice, wanting Charlie to chase. When he didnt Harry went into a huff and has ignored charlie since then. The birds are all in bed now, cant wait to see how it goes tommorrow.

Charlie is calling for his "Mum".so sad, but also eating preening, wagging his tail. I think he likes what he's seen so far.

Possible cause for not flying. Clipped before 12 weeks, kept clipped for several years, never learned how its done. I've noticed his flight feathers arnt "stuck" to each other, and sometimes stick out from the wing.

I got Baxter last year. He was 12 years old when I got him. He didn't fly either. Baxter was a cage bound grey. He was never let out of his cage so since he never had the opportunity in all those years, he just didn't do it and didn't know how to. When I got him, I let him out of his cage right from the start to come and go as he pleased. I thought he would fly but he didn't. He was never clipped and had all his flight feathers, too. I think it is due to the fact that he was never able to flap his wings and build up his muscles so that he could fly.

We have had long practice sessions (months and months) where he will hold on to my fingers and I will tell him to "Fly Baxter Fly" and he would flap his wings like crazy and go through all the motion but never let go of my finger. (so cute) He would get out of breath from it pretty quickly because he was not in shape but has build his stamina up quite a bit now.

He also will get on the top of his cage and flap like crazy. He is building them up and checking them out. I got him last year in July and it probably took a good 6 or 7 months before he actually flew on his own but he will do from time to time now.

It will just take time, patience and lots of practice. He was never around other birds before I got him so he didn't have any other birds to learn from either. He does now and he is doing really well with his flying. Still doesn't have the greatest control but has learned to round corners and can fly up onto a table or counter sometimes.

I am not sure if this is the same kind of situation as yours but I thought I would share it with you anyway. Hope it helps.

Hi Baxters mum, You decribe perfectly what Charlie appears to be doing. I shut him in his cage a couple of hours ago, and he started climbing to the top, across the roof down a bit and then did it again over and over. It looks as if hes been cage bound at some time.

You just reminded me of something in your post. When I first brought Baxter home, he would go up in the top corners and kind of pace back and forth. It looked like pretty neurotic behavior to me. It's like he was trying hard to get out through the bars and wanted out really bad pacing quickly back and forth:( He did that for about the first month I would say, maybe a little longer. That's all just a memory now as he has not done that in a long long time. I totally forgot.

I bet your Charlie just needs some love and care. I think that is why me and Baxter are so tightly bonded together. I have opened his hole world up and let him do so many things that he was never allowed to do. I feel real bad about his previous life but am glad that I have contributed to making it better. I can tell Baxter loves me for it too. :) Its so heartwarming for me.

Keep us posted on how he does.
