Brittany
Hello. Pepper is doing great, but she is molting. I have noticed she's leaving white flaky things around, and pretty itchy. It looks like dandruff, what could this be?? Do birds get dandruff?
Luvparrots
African greys have dander, which is white and flaky. If you spray her with Aloe Vera Juice that will help with the itchiness while molting.
SchroedersJen
If she is molting, then new feathers must be growing in too. Those flakes my be the bits of feather sheathes that she preens off. Be careful not to addrivate her pin feathers while you scritch her. The aloe juice is a great idea, if that doesnt work, try avisoother and more frequent baths. Avi soother is a favorite of the customers at the bird store I work at, and I have heard a lot of wonderful things about it. It doesnt stink. I tried our sample bottle on my own skin when I had an allergy rash one day and it felt really nice. http://www.avianlove.com/item/AVIX_SOOTHER_SPRAY/681/c122
judygram
If she is going thru a molt you are seeing pieces of the keratin, the sheath that surrounds the new feather, what we call the pin feathers and when she preens she is loosening up from the feathers and you see it fall like dandruff. She might benefit from more frequent baths and especially aloe vera juice sprays to help with the itchiness.
chimaysmommy
I would also recommend the aloe vera juice...if she's molting then the new pinfeathers may make her uncomfortable, keeping up the bathing will help with the itching
