Tari
So is she eating other stuff and just the seeds?
Tari
No not really. Try to get her to eat veggies too and keep offering the seed mix and a good quality pellet would be a good idea too. As long as she is eating and losing weight she'll be ok.
Tari
Something Like I only use that link cause that is what I feed. There are others like Pretty Bird and harrisons. [/url]http://www.naturechest.com/zupreem.html
Caspersmum
Hey Molly, Pellets are certainly the way to go - I buy mine on-line - I get Hagen Tropican, which my grey seems to loke, but if you want the best, go for Harrisons - most people on this site seem to use them, but they're not cheap. BUT seed is heaven to most birds - and it's odd that your parrot isn't eating them. Do you have any electronic scales? If not then you should get some - I bought mine for £9 from TK MAxx. This will allow you to keep an eye on your bird's weight - and you should weigh her at the same time each day - best time is after the first poo of the morning! It would also be a good idea to take her to an avian vet to get her checked out, to make sure there's nothing wring that's stopping her from eating her seeds, Hope this helps, Julia
Guest Lidia
Hi Molly, I'm based in Dublin, you don't say where you are in Ireland. You can get some pellets here. There are two petshops in the city I know carry pellets, though not Harrisons, I think, and possibly not Zupreem (as I don't use them myself, I don't pay too much attention when I pass them, but I'll look at them next week for you). One shop is "Wackers" and it is on Parnell Street, Dublin 1. Almost directly opposite the back of the Ilac Shopping Centre. They also carry a small range of parrot toys. But their seed mix is not great, and whenever I get it for Joshua, he is not impressed. The second one is on the Quays, on the south side, just before the Capel Street bridge. Can't think what it is called. They also do a fair selection of seeds and branded 'good quality' seeds from Germany. Again, their own seed mix isn't great. The branded ones they carry are very good but very expensive. The people who run this shop are very helpful and will order stuff for you if you've got the details of what you want. They're very helpful. There is another pet shop, the one I use, The Dublin Pet Store, up on Capel Street, it is next door to the Hua Wei computer shop, it is painted blue. They don't carry pellets, but they have a great parrot mix that Joshua loves (fruit mix), and it is very good quality. They're very nice people there and helpful too. It's probably best not to get your baby CAG eating something that isn't readily available to purchase. My grey won't go near pellets, not interested at all. I suspect he thinks they're too boring. But, on the other hand, he's eighteen now and I've been feeding him a seed-based diet since he was four months old and he is the healthiest, happiest creature you could ever hope to meet. As I type this, he is cracking open a chicken leg bone to get at the marrow inside. A varied diet is a good diet for a parrot is best, I think. Anyway, along with whatever staple you feed your grey (be it pellets or seeds), just make sure it gets fruit (apples, bananas, oranges, kiwis, pears, pineapple, melons, just whatever is to hand, but not avocados) and vegetables (just about anything, cooked or raw (not raw potatoes). Small amounts of non-fatty meat go down well, too. As you get to know your bird you'll get to know his/her likes and dislikes. You didn't say in your post how long your grey has not been eating. Is it just a day? Sometimes they can eat very little, they do take moods. Tell us, how old is your grey? How long have you had her? Did you get her in Ireland? Let us know how it goes. Guest briansmum
i'm with julia, pellets are deffinately the best. i was given a seed and pulse soaking mix by my breeder which brian would pick at while he was weaning, but as he got more weaned he was turning his beak up at them, so now i buy harrisons pellets from www.24parrot.com and brian loves them, he likes the big coarse ones that he can hold and crunch. seeds are like junk food to greys, so it is unusual yours does not like them, however i have to say this is not such a bad thing as seeds aren't particularly good for them, so i would take this is an opportunity to switch her to something all around more nuritional. and obviously keep feeding a selection of fruits and veggies
