hveusnthbrige Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 Anyone have full spectrum lighting? I might go get one and put it on a timer.. say from 9 to 9. But I dunno, it might just be hocus pocus unless I get a good quality one.
judygram Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 CD has one, I don't but have been thinking of getting one. Maybe he will post on his and where we can get one cheap.
CeasarsDad Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 YES.. Full spectrum lighting is a must.. Did you know that even if you put your Grey on the window sill of your home and the sun is shining directly on him he is not getting any benefits.. The problem is your windows filter out the beneficial light rays that aid in your Greys ability to process certain vitamins.. Research it if you don't believe me... Get One...
CeasarsDad Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 You can get it from www.mybirdstore.com do it.. It will make your Grey feel better...
dblhelix Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 Some people swear by them. I dont think its necessary provided you get your bird sufficient exposure to real, unfiltered sunlight a few times per week. Getting some window light every day is also good, but some direct sunlight is a must. Bottom line is that full spectrum lighting does not truly replicate sunlight anyways, there is no UV. It is UV-B that is specifically necessary in the production of Vitamin D. No substitute for the real thing.

Post edited by: dblhelix, at: 2007/06/28 02:06
hveusnthbrige Posted June 28, 2007 Author Posted June 28, 2007 I put my tiels in the sun in front of the window screen. They like to watch the hawks:dry: lol..... Yes CD, do you have a timer?

Of course there is no substitute for the real thing.. but full spectrum lighting is the next best thing..

Post edited by: CeasarsDad, at: 2007/06/28 02:04
hveusnthbrige Posted June 28, 2007 Author Posted June 28, 2007 I'm going to check out my birdy shop next time I'm in and pick something up. I foresee a light going on the cage shortly.
dblhelix Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 Agreed CD, it is the next best thing. There certainly is data out there showing the benefits of full spectrum lighting on animal's hormone levels and other health benefits, in the absence of sufficient exposure to real sunlight. I still do not think its "necessary" provided you get regular exposure to the real thing. But it certainly should not hurt!
CeasarsDad Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 Also.. here's an added benefit.. What till you see just how pretty your Grey looks under that light.. you won't believe your eyes... B)
miltie Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 I think they have them at Home Depot to for a reasonable price

Yeah Mark... but who really knows how much is enough.. and why worry about it.. Get the light, see how nice your bird looks under it... and cover your bases..
judygram Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 Well I am going to ask again, do you have yours on a timer, CD?
CeasarsDad Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 miltie wrote: I think they have them at Home Depot to for a reasonable price You can get the straight bulb type there.. yes.. I used that on Hercules' cage.. Very good.. Just a bit difficult adapting it to a cage like a grey would have..
judygram Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 Third times the charm, do you have yours on a timer, CD?
CeasarsDad Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 Sorry.. about the timer question.. Yes I have the timer.. It goes on at 7:30 am and stays on till about 5pm... Ceasar is never under the light for that time because he is out on his play tree most of the day.. but the light is on anyway... Makes the cage and his toys look good...
CeasarsDad Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 The round dome type is what I have.. let me see if I can find that photo.. Hang on...
judygram Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 Whew, finally, thanks CD, thats what I wanted to know, didn't think I would have to wait forever for it.
CeasarsDad Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 This is the only photo I have on this computer.. Look at the shield I made for the wire.. VERY IMPORTANT Don't worry... if you need help with the shield I can tell you how to do it.. it's easy and cheap

Post edited by: CeasarsDad, at: 2007/06/28 02:36
