BaxtersMom
OMG! Me and my husband were heading out this morning and we seen a small feathered baby bird in our yard. He was hopping around but couldn't fly. He didn't look hurt. I think he was trying his wings out and fell from the tree. I did see a couple of adult birds in the tree making a commotion but did not see a nest anywhere. He was getting all his feathers in and had pretty good control of his body but was still pretty akward. I put him up on a branch but he hopped right back down into the grass. We have a ton of neighborhood cats roaming the area:angry: and I knew he wouldn't last an hour before one of the cats spotted him. I took him in, I mixed up some oatmeal and baby food and fed him with a syringe, just the liquidy stuff and he ate for me. I fell in love right then. I wasn't confident in my caring for him so we called around and our local avian vet said to bring him in, they would care for him and release him when he was ready. So that's what we did. I miss him already. I named him Ichabod Crane in the short amount of time we had him but we took him to the vet, they were ready for him and they took him back for his next feeding right away. They said he was a Greyko? Not sure of the spelling but thats what it sounded like. From the similar birds in our yard I think he might have gotten about the size of a conure or maybe a little bit bigger. Here is some pics of Ichabod. I'm sure he will be fine. The vet clinic was thrilled he arrived

BaxtersMom
Last one of Ichabod Crane. He was already perching on the perch I had inside. I had it low and he seemed to enjoy it. He wasn't that afraid of us either. Gosh, I should have kept him but feel I did the right thing.
chimaysmommy
TOO CUTE!!!! I was just talking with someone here at work yesterday about a clutch of baby robins that her dad found abandoned in their backyard. She was trying to help him with figuring out what to do to help them and I found this website I thought users here might find helpful if this ever happened to them too: http://www.messingerwoods.org/babybirds.htm
BaxtersMom
Thanks for the link. Yes, I was panicked. I didn't know what to do either. Well, yes, I did....I contacted Dave here and unoaded everything on him and of course he knew exactly what to do. He is a godsend (most of the time;) ) Special thanks to Dave. I will give him some karma later on.
judygram
According to Dave you did the right thing, this is a creature that was meant to be outside with his own kind. The vet's office was the best place to take him as I imagine they have others that have met a similar fate but he is a cutie, thanks for taking the time to get him to the vet and for sharing the experience with us. BaxtersMom
It was my pleasure. I just had to share this little bundle of joy. I think it is best for him. I wanted to put him back up in the tree in his nest but I don't know exactly where he came from and I didn't see any nests where he may have come from. He brightened my day and I think I just might have saved his life today. I just wish I could have found his nest. I am so thankful that our vet here will take in lost and hurt birdies. Tycos_mom
Oh he is so Cute what a sweetheart You did the right thing. the parents will forget quickly so thats good I read somewhere that wild animals don't greive for long. About a year ago now I found a baby Squirral that had fallen from his nest. I raised him until he was weaned and then let him go in my back yard. I fed him puppy formula mixed with heavy cream apperently they need a really rich formula. he did really well when I found him he was only the size of 1/2 my baby finger about 1 inch He was so cute I called him Leroy. he was a Black squirral.
