Autumn
I am new to your group and trying to read all the posts I can. But I need some help. I am adopting a grey from a home that can no longer keep him for personal reasons, not because of him. He's an older bird (around 8-10yrs) and I was wondering if anyone had some advice about the best way to introduce an older bird to a new home. I really want his transition to be as smooth and stress free as I can make it. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Guest Monique
Hi Autumn!!! Welcome to our forum!! The best way to introduce a bird to a new home is to keep everything as similar as is possible. Note where is cage is now, ask about his routine, purchase his cage and all his toys if they will let you, try to put his cage in a similar type of location where he will have similar type interactions. Use exactly the same food as they are using. When he comes home have lots of patience with him and do not rush him. I am assuming he is hand-tame. I would be very gentle and not ask a lot of him at first for maybe a week giving him treats by hand and not taking him out unless he really is showing he want to be out. If when you get home you feel he is taking it badly you could partially cover his cage with a sheet so he feels more protected. Don't want to cover it all the way so he can't see anything but just a little for protection. Also, make sure you bring him home when there isn't something out of the ordinary going on (like a Superbowl party at your house or something). I hope this helps and look forward to your stories of you and your new bird!!! What is hs name?

Autumn
Thank you all for your advice. I am meeting him this week, and I am going to find out everything I can from his owner. I know she has been taking good care of him and he has been socialized. I am so excited to meet him and I want to do all I can to make him comfortable. I would love to hear anything else that you all think I should know or be ready for:lol: I've learned alot so far, from here, school, and books. I've wanted a grey for years now, so I've been researching for quite a while. As soon as I have my first meeting, I will let you all know how it goes, and what he is like. Until then, any more knowledge from everyone is very welcome. Thanks so much!!!!

judygram
Autumn, this will take time and patience so go slow and don't push for more that the grey will accept. It will take more time to establish a relationship with an older bird versus a baby but it will result in time well spent and you will be rewarded with a loving friend for life. Keep us informed and we will be for any questions you may have, we will help you every step of the way. Welcome to our greyt family.

judygram
You know why that site has really good information, it is the drsfostersmith site, I usually buy foods and toys from them all the time, I think they know their stuff.
Guest Lidia
Celery, An 8-10 year old bird is still quite young and if he/she is well-socialised in her present home he/she should adjust easily enough. I think from the amount of attention you're paying to the issue before you've even acquired the bird that it is a very lucky bird indeed and will do very well with you. Keep up the good work, and post a photo when you've got to know the new addition better.

Post edited by: Lidia, at: 2007/06/26 16:
