orphan1965
I know my baby will not be coming home until late June or early July. HOWEVER, me being me and wanting to be as prepared as possible I have a few questions. 1. To cover or not to cover the cage at night. My sun conure likes to be covered (after of course I play his music box) but my yellow nape goes ballistic if I cover. My Tiel could care less. 2. How many hours do they sleep? 3. perch size? 4. when to give first bath/shower? I am sure I will have more questions.......

Jon94
I too am getting a cag for the day school is over. You should buy all different sized perches, i heard somewhere that if they have only one perch there feet cramp. ( I dont know how true that is.) I guess they go to sleep a bit earlier than you, and probably wake up when you do.
she
Perches need to be a veriety of width and texture ,I believe bathing can begin once they are fully feathered,It is stated that 10-12 hours sleep is needed but I think mine get about 7 hours and they are doing ok. I think they catch up on rest while I am at work.Covering depends on the bird and your own preferances. I cover my birds as I feel it gives them a signal to settle for the night as well as shelter from any draughts in the winter. Hope this helps. Luvparrots
Hi Orphan1965, I don't cover my Ana Grey's cage, I believe if I covered her cage the air wouldn't be able to circulate as well. She sleeps 10-12 hours at night. As for perches, she has several different kinds, a cement perch, manzanita perch, wacky wood, and grapevine. I got my grey at four months and she was fully weaned so I have bathed her from day one as she was fully feathered. You must be so very excited and can't wait for your grey to come home. I remember that feeling and they are so worth the wait!!!!
Tycos_mom
I cover all my birds at night My Macaw I only cover the top half because when I got him he was 8yrs old and was a little scared of being covered now he likes it and slleps better because of it. Adaya I also only cover the top half of her cage because she is just a baby and I want to be able to keep an eye on her. All the other are covered completely I have many sizes shape and textures of perches in my birds cages because thats what keeps there feet healthy I also cut many of my own perches off the bird safe trees in my back yard. They love to chew the bark off them and they are great for their feet. They all have at least one or 2 of these in their cages.
myafricanqueen
I personally do not cover my bird up at nite as I think they should be able to have good air flow as well as be able to see a little if they NEED to for whatever reason. A total of 12 hours each day is good enough for sleep, my birds nap during the day as well. I put Dalia to bed btwn. 10-11pm. Unless she really doesnt seem ready, usually cuddle time is 9-10pm so by 10/1030 she is yawning and ready to go to bed. Because she always wants to be with me, I give her a little treat in her dish when I put her to bed in her cage. Perches should be all sizes and types. Do not place them over the feed/water dish as she will get her droppings in it! ew! She should bath when she is comfortable with you and your home. Dalia took a week and a day or two before she wanted to. Your baby will most likely be shy and rather quiet as far as sound making and such until she is used to you and the environment. Good luck when you get your baby, you must be so excited I know I was and I could hardly wait to go pick her up! Cristen
