Hey everyone,

My mom just got her black headed Caique on Friday. He is 9 weeks old today, hatched Feb. 17, 2009. He is not DNA'd yet but I'm just going to call him a he and he still isn't named yet either. Anyways ever since we brought him home he seems so scared of us. He screams everytime we touch him or go near him. Its like he has never been handled before. The breeder hatched it and fed it since day one so he use should be use to us handling it right? Its from the same breeder that I got my Ecko from and Ecko is very social and will go to anyone so I know she played with him alot. But this Caique doesn't seem tame. Could it be because the breeder didn't handle him much? She says that thats how Caiques are as babies is this true? Are Caiques supposed to scream and run away everytime we handle it, even we were are feeding it? I'm thinking all she did was feed it and then put it back and not play with it. What could be the problem? Maybe I just need to give it more time to adjust to us but I just wanted to see if anyone out there has a Caique and knows of their behaviors.

Please help!

Thanks, Caitlin

I'm surprised I actually got him to stay still to take a pic of him. lol he wobbles away every chance he gets.

Thanks Catlin for sharing your mom's caique with us. He is a cutie. I only have my grey so I can't help with characteristics of caiques but I am looking forward to seeing more of your mom's sweet baby!!!

He doesn't look so cute to me at this age, maybe when he gets all of his feathers he will.

I don't know much about caiques either but give him a little more time and see if he settles down some, if not give the breeder a call and find out about him.

In any case thanks for sharing the little bugger with us.

Caique babies tend to be very timid until they get to be closer to around 12 weeks. Then let the fun begin!!! Caiques are so so much fun, look at them they are even dressed like clowns

Yes I've seen them allot in the pet store close to me and most all the time they are flying over to get someones attention they love to show off and play foranyone that will watch. Your moms little guy is a cutey I'm sure with the right nurturing that baby will be running to you in no time.

No I don't have any recent pics right now but I will take some tomorrow when I go to my moms house. He is going to the vet tomorrow because the Caique Forum thinks there is something wrong with him. They say he looks way too small to be 9 weeks old, so I am going to ask the vet. Wish us luck! I hope their isn't anything wrong with him!

Here are some different pics from the same day as the other ones.

The vet visit went great! She said he looks very healthy. She did a couple of tests and she said that he has no bacteria infection and the poop looks normal. His weight is good too. I am very relieved now because that Caique forum scared me lol. I have new pictures also but can't upload them until I get home. Thanks for the concern guys. :)

I'm so glad he checked out ok and he certainly looks better from the picture you shared, he has more feathers now, he is going to be a beauty when he gets fully feathered, keeps us updated on him so we can watch his progress.

She's a real beauty. Congratulations and may she stay healthy and bring lots of joy. Can you tell me which forum you are referring to? I'd love to learn more about these birds. Thanks! :)

So, tell us, how is her personality coming along? Is she still running from you? Or has she perked up. We had a caique (white bellied) and she was an absolute riot! We loved her to death. We bought her from a pet store (our very first bird ever, so we didn't know any better) she was sick the whole time we had her. I think we spent triple in vet bills than what she cost and remember we bought her from a store, so they are double the price of a breeder. Well, despite her illnesses, she was a great bird, but eventually succombed to her issues.
