myrafix
Hi everyone- Im new here- Just recently lost my Green Cheeked Conure- very heart broken and thinking about a Timneh African Grey. After talking w/several owners would like to find a breeder with in 2 hours of me, so i could be in on the feeding etc.- I have heard if you can be appart of the feeding it will bond you better w/your bird. So can anyone help me? Is there anyone out there that breeds or knows some info for Kansas City area or Topeka? Thanks 4 any help or ideas- and thanks for taking time to read Melinda
judygram
Hello Melinda and welcome to the family, so glad you could join us and we look forward to hearing more about you and maybe a grey for you. I am so sorry to hear of your loss of your precious conure and I can see that is probably him/her in the picture in your avatar snuggling up to your neck. Have you done your research to make sure a grey is a right fit for you and your lifestyle, they require a certain amount of time and attention and if they don't get it they develop unwanted behaviors. Let me make this point about being a part of the handfeeding, it is not necessary to participate in the handfeeding to bond with your grey. When you actually bring your weaned baby home and it becomes comfortable there and it comes to trust you then it is bonded with you. It will be helpful if you live close enough to the breeder that you can visit with your baby so it comes to know you a little before it comes home with you. You can do a search for breeders in your area by going to this site and looking by state www.avianbiotech.com You will find lots of useful information in our many threads so do read thru them at your leisure and do not hesitate to ask questions you may have and we will help you in any way we can. chimaysmommy
Welcome!! I unfortunately do not know any breeders in your area, however I would HIGHLY recommend the breeder we had gotten our Congo from. She is in Georgia, we're in Ohio and our baby was very very well socialized...we couldn't have asked for a better breeder. She kept us informed, always same-day responses to email queries, regular photo updates, and our Chimay has bonded with us very well. If you are interested in her information please let me know, otherwise good luck on your quest for the perfect breeder! And welcome again!
MrsB
I don't know about the breeder, but I wanted to say: Great choice!! We got a little TAG girl and we adore her!! She is amazing, smart, sweet and I can't imagine life without her...it's only been a month!
adams
Melinda, glad you found your baby. I live in Lawrence ks and there is a breeder in the KC area, Berties Birds She advertises in the Bird Talk magazine. Our rescue group, Beak N' Wings meats monthly and has great educational information and support if you're interested. Best of luck with your new baby, and hope to see you in the future. JillyBeanz
Hi Melinda - sorry about your loss. I lost my cockatiel back in January 2009 and then extensively researched the African Greys. I can't comment on any other parrots - but my cockatiel took care of itself in comparison to what it takes to look after my grey - they absolutely change your routine and life and you have to accept this when choosing your lifelong companion (as they live for many, many years). Even though I'd had birds all my life (my cockatiel was 17 and I had budgies etc before) I am still learning about my CAG and he is nearly one. I hope you make the right decision and find a reputable breeder :)
