how much is too much?

i'm not sure if this should go in the nursery or here but...

my little guy is weaning and learning how to fly, and he's losing weight, which i knew to expect...but how much is too much weight loss? he went from 397g to 380g to 379g in the past few days. he's refusing most of his formula, and doesn't seem to be eating anything on his own, but he's acting perfectly normal and flying around like crazy...should i be worried?

yup...he's pooping normal. everything about him is still normal except he's not eat like he did and he's losing weight. i made an appt for him later today just to make sure it's not a crop infection. (his not eating started friday night) i'll let you know what she says

I know they naturally cut down on food and loose weight just before fledging in preperation for flight,I am not sure how much,It is right for you to have him checked out if you are not sure. Well done you.

*sigh* well we're back from the vet...crop infection. did I do something to cause this? he started refusing his fomula about the time he was done with his meds for e. coli, so maybe he's had it a while? does anyone know what causes a crop infection? i'm hoping after this clears up my little guy stays healthy!! oh i forgot too...he has a name now...it's willis :) thanks for the support everyone!

The average weight loss is around 10 to 15% I know how scary it can be Adaya has gone from 470gr down to 427 grms over this last week the only hand feeding she will take is her night time one and only about 30 to 35cc of that she eats her food but Iwould love to see her eat more it scares me. She's acting normal in every way so if her weight doesn;t stableize I'll be takeing her in as well

I'm glad you took your baby in to see the vet for the crop infection was picked up, Idon't know what causes it but at least now he can be treated for it. Keep us informed of how he does in the next few days.

Willis huh, is that after Bruce Willis maybe?

What a great name, Willis, I like it!!! So glad you now know what the problem is with Willis, fingers crossed that the medication will clear everything up and Willis will be right as rain. You're a good Mommy to have immediately taken him to the vet to get this all cleared up!!

Well after reading this I'll be making an apointment tomorrow for Adaya I don't like the fact that she is losing so much weight either but she does eat still and she takes her formula just not as much as she did before she still eats about 25cc in the morning and the veggies and seeds in her dish and she gobbles her night time formula and takes 35 to 45 cc before bed so mabie it is just because she is fledging she flew 60 ft tonight could a sick bird do that.

Post edited by: Tycos_mom, at: 2009/04/21 07:18

tycosmom-willis didn't eat anything really! he wouldn't even look at his veggies, which he loves, and he usually comes running at the sight of his syringe, and nothing. i gave him his first does last night, and he still didn't eat. but then before i left for work last night(10:45pm) he was pecking at his pellets! then this morning i gave him his meds again (which he hates cuz i don't mix it with his formula since he's not eating it) and he ate 35cc! still a little less than normal but soo much better! i'm so happy he seems to be eating again! i hope it continues and wasn't just a fluke. thanks all you guys!!

My baby is going through the same thing as yours! He is also losing alot of weight and not eating alot. He refuses his formula and he lost 30+ grams. I was worried so I called the vet and asked her if I should be worried and she said that its normal. I went to a follow up vet apt for his crop infection on Friday and she said he still has bacteria in his crop after giving him the meds for 10 days. So she gave me a different kind of meds to build his immune system so now I give him 1 drop a day of this med. I don't know what causes the crop infections either but I felt like it was my fault also. The vet reassured me that it is common for babies to get bacteria because their immune system isn't that strong when they are babies. He is doing great other than that though, he just learned how to fly and he gets up pretty high now. He is eating more of his pellet mix too so thats a good thing. I hope you baby continues to do good also. :)

how old is your baby? mine's about 13 1/2 weeks. he flys all over the place! i think he's a little behind with things (i don't think the breeder did things she should of) but still is normal. he didn't start to try flying until 12 weeks or so (later, but still normal) and he's getting really good at it now! he also didn't see a perch till i got him (10 weeks), and wasn't introduced to anything (food wise, or toys) except formula and a few pellets, until i got him. he's doing really well getting around on his tree i made (which he LOVES!!!) and his cage. and i'm hoping once this crop infection is gone, that'll be the end of our problems!

Well Adaya is up 2 grams from yesterday and she took 35cc of formula so I guess I wait and see how she does over the next few days she is still eating she loves her veggies and seed&nut mix she's not eating as many pellets as I would like her too so I started puttin some in her seed mix even though her seed mix does have pellets init anyway I would rather see her eat the Zupreem pellets my vet said either harrisons or Zupreem are the best.

He is 11 weeks old. I don't think your baby is slow, every baby is different and some learn at a different pace. There is no set schedule of when a baby is suppose to learn something new. I think your doing a great job with your baby. Do you have any new pics of him? I'd love to see how big your baby got. :)

Post edited by: caitb2007, at: 2009/04/21 21:20
