Elotemuygrande
Could anyone give any suggestions for what to feed my newly purchased grey. Right now I'm feeding pellet style food labeled for greys bought at pet smart but I'm sure that there is something tastier, healthier, and less expensive. What do you guys feed your Grey? Are the pellet foods better as the pet owner said or should I be feeding raw seed/fruit based mixes?
Tari
I feed mostly fruit, veggies, rice, pasta, the kitchen sink. OK not the sink but I try to get as much stuff as I can. I love those 15 bean mixes. Without the seasoning. Easy to fix and usually add the frozen veggie mix from the freezer area. I add fresh veggies and fruit when on sale or I have an extra couple dollars. Probable not cheaper then the pellet mix but better for them. When I'm hand feeding babies I give her left over formula in the winter she gets warm oatmeal. She likes me to spoon feed these too her. I do this cause if I ever have to give her meds it well be easy to add to the oatmeal as long as it don't taste to nasty.
Elotemuygrande
Thanks for your input Tari! I'll definitely try to introduce her to the beans, veggies, and oatmeal...that sounds great.
spookyhurst
For pellets, Nikko eats Pretty Bird African Special, Goldenfeast Goldenobles (organic), and Fruity Zupreem. She also eats lots of other stuff. For breakfast, she has oatmeal with soy milk and flax seed, banana, a piece of walnut, cheerios, and grape nuts. For lunch, she'll have a piece of whole wheat bread with a little peanut butter, apple, and grape. For supper, she has vegetables (usually carrot, peppers, cucumbers, radish, corn, peas, squash, and/or potatoes) as well as whatever we are having (anything from spaghetti to fish to pizza). At bedtime, she has an almond or pine nuts. She also has seasonal items, like tonight she had some watermelon. Sometimes I'll make her some cook and serve foods, like those from Goldenfeast, Beak Appetite, and Crazy Corn. Occasionally, she'll have some sunflower seeds, but not too many. Elotemuygrande
Thanks! Your bird seems to have a better diet than I do! I've had Grendel a week and she's already turning into my baby. I had no idea people fed them such a variety of foods.
spookyhurst
A variety of foods is really good for your grey. The very healthiest are green leafy vegetables (kale, mustard greens, collard greens, etc.) and orange fruits and vegetables (sweet potatoes, squash, carrots, papaya, cantaloupe, etc.). Unfortunately, I have yet to get Nikko interested in the green leafies. She just throws them on the floor . But thankfully, butternut squash is one of her favorites. She likes the seeds too. They really have a pungent odor, but she thinks they're a delicacy. The one food to avoid is avocado. It's deadly to them. And of course chocolate. It seems like that's bad for all animals. spookyhurst
Oh, I forgot one of Nikko's favorites: eggs. She LOVES scrambled eggs and the yolk from hard boiled eggs.
Guest briansmum
hey there, congrats on your new grey! greys can eat anything with the exception of avacado, chocolate, alcahol, caffine and highly fatty/salty foods. I have sucessfully switched Brian to Harrisons pellets, he is on high potency at the moment as he's still a baby, and he's a picky thing so i have to buy coarse and fine varieties as he changes his mind daily :silly: he then gets lots of different fuits and veggies (as already listed) and everything from a bit of pizza to a lick of ice cream. so go wild! and expose your grey to as many new foods as possible as early as possible. p.s. a seperate question.. i'm a brit and have no idea what kale, mustard greens and collard greens are, can anyone tell me where, or what i can find in my supermarket? what about spring greens? are they the same thing?
