dyrkie
Hi there Me and my girlfriend yesterday adopted a 2 month old Timneh. It has been very relaxed and is quite happy preening in front of us and seems very sociable. We've got a smallish cage for it while it's young. My girlfriend placed cardboard on the inside of the cage to prohibit him from climbing the sides. Her concern is that his young beak might get damaged by too much climbing initially. I on the other hand feel that not being able to climb must frustrate it somewhat and surely it will know it's own limits? Any thoughts on this? I personally also feel very sorry for a caged animal and am not yet certain what sounds to interpret as happy or distressed. As I'm typing this it's sitting next to me on the desk -listening to Ella Fitzgerals and quietly chirping - which I hope is happy chirps. Actually it seems to be nodding off. The question I guess is - how many hours a day should a young bird be sleeping and in their cage? A final question relates to diet... We are continuing with what the pet store hand-reared it on - which is a porridge like mixture via a syringe - how much and how often should a two-month old Timneh eat? And how much water? It does not seem to need or want to drink too much. Thanks in advance - great forum. Dyrkie
lovethatgrey
At that age... they sleep ALOT. They eat, play and investigate a bit and SLEEP. Being a cute young baby is actually quite exhausting. As they get older, they become more alert, active and more curious about their surroundings. Clean and fresh water must ALWAYS be provided. How "smallish is your cage?". Could you provide a picture? Each baby parrot is it's own individual when it comes to eating. Are you very experienced at handfeeding? Tycos_mom
Please read through the handfeeding thread in the nursery its very important. I know Timnahs mature faster than Cags so I would say you could proubuly start putting a variatiy of fresh chopped up small fruits and veggatables in his cage. if your worried about him climbing don't its the only way he's going to learn put a blanket under the newspapers so if he falls he won't get hurt also if the cage allows for it place a perch at one end about 3 inches from the side of the cage down low so He can learn to perch when and if he's ready. Just offer lots of healthy foods and your bird will slow itself down on handfeeding itself don't stop until he starts refusing it on his own. There is a ton of useful information on this forum just use the search option for any questions and if you can't find something just ask your question and someone will always be willing to help. welcome to our family what is your baby's name.<br><br>Post edited by: Tycos_mom, at: 2009/04/04 22:
Eckobird
Hello Dyrkie and welcome to the forum! Congrats on getting your new baby Timneh! Have you decided on any names yet? Can't wait to see some pictures of your new baby. I have a baby Congo around 2 months old too and I just put him in his normal cage. He learned how to climb and perch really good. I would remove the cardboard from the cage so your baby can start to learn how to climb. It also helps their muscles get stronger. You said the cage is small so you don't have to worry about him falling down far. As for the beak getting damaged, I really don't think that is a problem because all they do is hold on with their beak or pull themselves up. I like to hold my baby alot too and play with him outside of the cage alot but they are really young and they need to sleep so when I notice him getting sleepy I put him back in the cage so he can get his sleep. You should do the same when you see him nodding out. They should be getting at least 9-10 hours of sleep at night too. What kind of formula are you using? Is it Kaytee Exact? That is the formula I am using and I feed my baby 2 times a day now (this is the 2nd day). He was on 3 feedings a day, morning, lunch, and night but he started to refuse the feeding at lunch so I stopped giving it to him. For each feeding he eats about 40-45cc or until he refuses it. You should also start the weaning process with your baby at this age. Give him a bowl of pellets (Harrisons are the most preferred) and a bowl of fresh fruits and veggies. Give him a variety of colors and different textures and he will become very interested in them. He should always have a bowl of clean water, you might not see him drink alot of it but thats ok because the water in the formula is good enough. Please read through the many threads on this forum to get more info on weaning your baby. I provided you with some links that are very helpful! Good luck on your new baby and please keep us posted on his progress and don't hesitate to ask any questions! There is always someone here that can help or give great advice! http://www.greyforums.net/forums/the-nursery/73409-handfeeding-a-baby-grey.html http://www.greyforums.net/forums/the-nursery/73842-associated-risks-of-hand-feeding.html<br><br>Post edited by: caitb2007, at: 2009/04/04 22:
