Today I served sprouts to Emma for the very first time. She enjoyed them almost immediately! It took me only 3 days to grow them. Today it was Adzuki beans, next week I will have her try garbanzo bean sprouts and sunflower seed sprouts. Do you guys sprout for your parrots too?:)

I went to the vet today and my vet told me about sprouting seeds. I have never heard of it before and now I am going to start to do it. I googled it and learned a lot about it. I am going to sprout sunflower seeds. My vet says they are way more healthier when they are sprouted. I have a mixture of Zupreem pellets, dried fruits and a seed mixture with sunflower seeds in it that I have been giving my baby to nibble on but now I am going to have to pick all of the sunflower seeds out to sprout them lol oh well my babys health is worth it.:)

Sprouts are about 50% of Phoenix and Sweet Peas diet,we're still trying to convince Gil that they really are yummy

sprouting can be pretty easy and definitely doesn't need special equipment. I use jelly straining bags,or hemp bags, but stainless steel tea balls work out great if you aren't going for a lot of sprouts. But a U2 eats a LOT of sprouts,so I sprout about a quarter cup of dry mix a day

Among Phoenix and Sweet Pea sprouted wheat berries, barley and quinoa are favorites. We also like mung beans, and popcorn. Since I know Gil loves sunflower seeds,I'm gonna go and get some soaking now, don't ask me why I didn't think of it sooner

Post edited by: Parrotdise, at: 2009/04/03 00:35

Sprouts are awesome! My grey loves them and gets them for about 60% of her diet also. I used to only feed them in small quantities but my vet recommended that they be 50% or more of the diet. I do a mixture of lentils, chick peas, quinoa, broccoli, alfalfa, black-eyed peas, fenugreek, sunflower seeds and radish or mustard seed when I can get it. I soak this for 24 hours and then lay out the seeds on a plate between two damp paper towels. As long as I keep the top paper towel damp (I wet it twice a day) I have sprouts in a day and a half.

I haven't been able to get wheat berries or whole oats to sprout yet. For some reason they just get soft during the soaking process and never produce tails. Anyone have tips on how to sprout these items? I'd really like to add more grain to the sprout mixture to balance it out.

What's funny is that when Athena sees me making the sprouts (the rinsing/dampening towels and such) she'll come stand over the plate and make those little baby begging sounds. It's so cute and I feel so bad when I tell her she has to wait!

I think I'm going to try the Sprout Master tray sprouter in the near future as keeping plates going on my counter takes up space, and I think I might want to start sprouting for myself. Has anyone tried this sprouter?
