ZivaDiva
Hi All, My name is Joann and I adopted an AG on Monday. Her name was Diva and I'm not thrilled with the name so we are calling her Ziva. I wanted to stay with a name close to her original name since she says it all the time. She's 6 years old and her former human is 91 yrs. old and can no longer care for her. Things are going well but I feel so guilty leaving her home while I'm at work. Her former human let her sit in the doorway of the cage all day and she'd pet her and talk to her. I can only do that after work and well, I do have other things to do. I'm trying to come up with things that will keep her entertained and happy. We also have 2 cockatiels and a lovebird. I've never had a grey before and she's a blast as she has quite a large vocabulary. My daughter was reading to her last night and stumbled on a big word and Ziva laughed at her. My 15 year old is concerned that Ziva is smarter than she is. I can't wait to read this site more and learn as there seems to be a lot to be learned. Eckobird
Hello Joann and welcome to the forum! So glad you could join. How nice of you to give Ziva a loving home! Make sure you have lots of toys for Ziva in her cage so during the day while your at work she will keep herself busy. You can take her out after you get home from work. That is what my mom does, she works 9-5 and she takes Slate(her grey) out for a couple hours before work and then a couple hours after work and he is one happy grey. Anyways congrats on your new grey, if you have any pictures of Ziva we would love to see them. Enjoy the site:)
BaxtersMom
Hello Joann and Ziva. Welcome to the forum. Ziva is real lucky for you to have given her a loving home. Don't feel too guilty about leaving her in the cage while you are at work. We all have things to do and lots of us work full time jobs. As long as she gets out of the cage time in the afternoons or evenings it should be fine. I hear they need about 4 hours outside the cage time a day. She will settle in to her new routine. Caitb gave great advice about the toys. They do need toys to play with and keep them selves amused during the day so boredom doesn't strike. Also many people will leave the TV or a radio on. Some even put them on timers for them. Greys are wonderful birds and I'm sure you will fall in love quickly with her. We'd love to see some pictures of her and the rest of your flock when you get the chance.

Post edited by: BaxtersMom, at: 2009/03/26 21:
ZivaDiva
Me,again. I am going to buy a radio of some kind for Ziva this weekend. Any idea if it's better for her to listen to talk radio or music? I'll obviously see if she has a preference but didn't know if there were any reasons or ideas about one being better than the other one. We don't have tv so that's not an option. I'm tempted to get it now for her. My daughter would be so thrilled. I'm working on the out of cage time. Ziva likes to be petted and she'll put one foot on your hand. She won't do both and let us lift her up. She's also not stick trained so getting back in the cage is drama. I'll be working on the stick training this weekend so it will make life easier for all of us.

casper
Hiya and welcome to the forum. Its great you have taken in an older grey, I look forward to hearing more about you both. A radio is a really great idea, I leave one on for my three when I have to go to work or go out for a few hours. Like someone else said as well, lots of shredding and puzzle toys are lots of fun for your grey. Cant wait to see some photos when you get some, hope you enjoy it here:)

ZivaDiva
Thanks for the welcome. Deby - I'm in West LA over by Cedar Sinai Hospital. I'm going to be heading out your way soon to check out the bird store Bird Bungalow. Have you been there before? I'd love to know if you think it's worth my time. Your bird is adorable!
