Guest
This is what I like best: to read that a bird's gone lost and in the same time reading he's found and all is well. I'm happy for you SFsailor B)
dblhelix
Great news! Hooray!! B) You and Poncho are lucky!!! Of course realize that Poncho has no lesson to learn. We, the unnatural keepers of these birds in captivity, are responsible for their welfare and proper management. We should all take this example seriously as many people do permanently lose their beloved birds and inadvertent escape is a real possibility for us all. Often when they get out they fly too far too fast and get lost, another real issue is that when out they can easily get picked off by a larger predatory bird like a hawk or eagle. In any event so glad to hear this one ended well!
judygram
I too am glad to hear Poncho is home safe and happy. I knew you would get him back and you will hold on to him tightly from now on.{Feel-good-000200BB}
Spectre
I don't know if this will be the greatest advice but... Go out and get a net. Prefferably as long in reach as possible. If he lets you get close to him without flying away, then get near him and scoop him with it. Then flip it around so he's trapped in there. Yeah, it'll probably be a bit traumatic, but its better than never getting him back and who knows what happening to him. Good luck man, I hope you get your little guy back. SFsailor
Poncho has shown no ill effects from his "wilding" except for a HUGE increase in his appetite... So much so that I was able to get him in the cage by just placing regular bird food in it

judygram
He found the pickins were slim out there on his own and with the activity of flying burning calories I'll bet he was hungry. So glad he is back in your loving arms again.{Love-000200C5}
carlylu
That is great that he's still nearby. He should be ready for some of his favorite treats I bet! I just want to add, clipped or not, parrots can fly very well when they have a little adrenaline or wind helping them out. The only really reliable way to keep your bird safe from an accidental escape is to train it to come when called. It is an easy skill to teach, it just requires daily practice. But what better thing to do than to have something fun to do with your bird where he can earn treats? If anyone has questions about how to teach this, I will post a link to some instructions in the Training section. I hope we hear good news soon! raz
dblhelix
Hi Carlylu - I would be interested in some recall pointers, though I had my parakeet fly to me on command all the time when I gave a cue (mine was simply "Come here"...) so I imagine its all about repetition, reward, conditioning etc. BTW - the Grey the thread was started about HAS been safely found!!! Reread all the posts!! Hooray
carlylu
Great news! (It didn't come up on the board until after I posted mine -- things seem to be popping up out of order today) Here's the link to info on recall training. You're right, it's ALL about repetition, conditioning, and reinforcement. With parrots you are also going against their natural genetic instincts (still very strong because they are not many generations from their wild cousins) which tell them to fly AWAY from dangerous creatures like humans. But these guys are smart, and why should dogs outperform us?? http://www.likambo.com/recall/ raz
Richardsmommy
Wow! I'm so glad I didn't see this thread until after the bird was found. I'd be worrying all night over him. I am SO glad this thread has a happy ending!
