Hey there!!!

My Grye needs a grooming or rather I think that........

His nails is very sharp we have a avian vet but I am a bit concerned because my friend took hers to him ,he did cut his nails and beak and gave him a B12 injection needles to say Joe (grye) wasn't impressed and sulked for 2 days lol.....but regarding my concern why inject him with B12? Joe is happy and fine so it can't be that bad but I'm a little scared:ohmy:

Thanx Nat

Your friend's grey may have had some reason for the B12 shot so don't worry about that.

Do you provide any rough or cement perches near his food or water bowls? They tend to help keep the nails from being so sharp but if you think he needs it then by all means have them filed down some. An avian vet will usually use a dremel tool to do the job and it takes just a few minutes to do it.

The beak should not need a trim unless it is growing out of alignment, they usually do a pretty good job of keeping their beak in good condition themselves.

Some greys will be stressed out or upset about vet visits and will act accordingly but it varies from one to another, Josey usually takes her visits in stride.

Don't be upset or scared about taking him in to see the vet for procedures, sometimes it is necessary and that is all part of grey ownership, you take the bad along with the good but most of it is good thank heavens.

When we took our 2 for their yearly check we got the nails filed, very quick process with the file. Our vet also encouraged us to do it ourselves at home with a file. Most people use cement/sand or pumice perches in the cage which works to keep them in shape.

Don't be scared of the vet visit your grey will stress even more if he feels your stress. The first couple of times our vet actually made us wait outside while she did everything and then brought them out to us.

Of course they are a little chocked but when we get them home we give them lots of treats as well. I also make sure I don't act different when we get them home. So I don't go up to them and go poor you are you ok and make a big fuss. I just carry on like it's a normal day.

Our female was fine last visit a couple of weeks ago and even got out into the vet reception area and proudly announced that she wanted to go for a shower.

My grey has never needed beak or nails trimmed, I use a perch designed to trim them and it seems to do the job. If your grey really needs grooming it is best a vet does it,it is rare that beaks need trimming. It is a good oportunity for the vet to give the bird a good check over.

I personally don't use any type of cement perch for Emma but I've been filing her nails since she was about 3 months old. Her baby nails were SO sharp. I knew that I had to come up with an action plan or else I'd be spending alot of money on parrot pedicures. Today I file her nails about once a month and it's a very comfortable process for both of us.

Grooming is important if it is hindering your parrot from perching properly as well as for your own comfort too. It's not fun to have your parrot perch on you if it is painful that's for sure. I think if I wasn't able to file Emma's nails.. I'd only bring her to someone after watching them file another parrot's nails. I'd have to feel comfortable with their approach and techique.
