Quickdood
Hello, Today I told my wife to give my bird some red palm oil because it is good for her feathers. Unfortunately we had a misunderstanding and instead of giving it to Lily on a cracker she give Lily a bath with red palm oil in it. Now Lily feathers are oily and orange. Does anyone have a good idea on how to get this stuff off her, my wife tried to give her another bath and it isnt coming off. Thanks, Greg
Dave007
I assume that the palm oil was mixed in with water? If so, the naural dryness and dander underneathe the skin will eventually dry out the oil and it will slowly fall off. Your bird will also help in taking it off but it's gonna take awhile. In the mean time, give your bird frequent baths in warm water because warm water will help the oil rise up off the feathers. There is no quick way to wash off the oil though. Tycos_mom
You can bath her in dawn dish soap this will get the oil out of her feathers. Make sure you you rince her really well. if she is still oily after that please take her to the vet if her feathers are comprimised she could die. Quickdood
Thanks for the quick answers, yes the oil was mixed in water(thank god). I will try the dawn dish soap, hopefully it will do the trick. Thanks Again.
Talon
Dawn is awfully harsh to their skin. I WOULD NOT use it. Also, after they are done with the bath, they will preen, it will be almost impossible to get all the soap residue off their underlying feathers and skin. A call to your avian bet is the best advice you can get.
judygram
I agree that dawn dish liquid may be too harsh to use on a grey's feathers and skin and may be next to impossible to remove all residue. I would go with Dave's recommendation to just give frequent baths and let nature take its course, but you can always consult your avian vet for another opinion. Sallas
Yes, I would not feel confident in getting all of the Dawn residue out of her feathers and when your bird preens it may ingest the dishsoap and if he/she ingests enough it could kill it. danmcq
Look at the bright side, you'll just have a "Red Factor" Grey for a while. ;-) The good thing is, it's not something that will harm your Grey. :-)
Quickdood
Thanks for all the input. I just got off the phone with my avian vet and they are going to give her a bath in a special solution to get the oil off. She will have to be at the vet all day tomorrow, poor baby
danmcq
Oh boy, well atleast your Grey will be cleaned up. That RPO does stain fairly easy though. Hopefully it will all come out if you are going to go through that.
Luvparrots
Greg, so glad your vet has a way to clean the RPO off of Lily. Out of curiosity what cleaning solution is your avian vet using??? And Dan "now you have a Red Factor grey" bad, bad, boy!!

Quickdood
I talked to the vet, they use some kind of detergent to get the oil off. She is back now and looks good as ever. Thanks for all the input.
