zingarette Posted February 23, 2009 Share Posted February 23, 2009 Hello all! My name is Aubri, and my husband Thomas and I are hoping to add a CAG to our family in a month or two. We're on an internship at the moment, but come April, I'll be back home. We've been in contact with a breeder there, and are hoping that all works out so that we can take home one of the babies she has in the nursery. We're slightly experienced "Parrot People" as we have an Indian Ringneck (Kaya, she's 2) and a Green Cheek Conure (Stratford, he's 1). I've worked in the pet industry, with a special focus on birds. I have handfed, I have given first aid, and I have made toys. I have a bit of training experience, and love to "cook" meals for my little flock. Each of our birds are very well loved. I'm excited to bring home our new baby Grey. He/She will be about three-five months old when we get him/her. I don't worry about our other birds becoming used to a new flock member. They're very accepting of change, and used to all sorts of people and animals. I do have some more questions, before we bring the baby home. Can I ask those here? zingarette Posted February 23, 2009 Author Share Posted February 23, 2009 Thanks Lyric! I'm mostly concerned about cage size. There will be someone home most hours of the day. I will be working two jobs (one full-time in a Hair Salon, and one part-time (hopefully at a pet store, needin' a discount here!). My husband is in school, but will be home frequently for studying and in-between classes and such. We're very seriously considering a slightly smaller cage, as we're in an apartment. It would quite literally be just a sleeping cage, and then used maybe two-three hours a day for hanging out in. Our Grey would be on a playstand, on us, or on the opening at the top of the cage the remainder of the time. Does anyone else use that type of setup? A smaller cage that's only really used for sleeping? I know a lot of people who do, and I never really thought twice about it until I saw the pictures up on the forum... a lot of people here have HUGE cages. judygram Posted February 24, 2009 Share Posted February 24, 2009 Hello Aubri and welcome to the family, so glad you could join us and we look forward to hearing more about you and this new grey. Well you certainly have some bird experience although having a grey in the house is different, he/she will require more attention and personal time but you seem to have thought this thru. Greys need a large cage especially if they spend a lot of time in it but whenever no one is home they do need to be caged for there is too much for them to get into if left out. I would suggest you go for the larger cage because there are going to be times he/she will have to be left when everyone has to be out at the same time, we all have those times. Please read thru the many threads for lots of useful information and do ask questions you may have and we will help you in any way we can. I'll be back in ID around the beginning of April, and will (hopefully) bring him home around that time. It all depends on whether or not the breeder we're working with has any left from this clutch. Since we're not within any sense of a reasonable distance, she's going to try to sell the babies to homes closer until we get there. I'm totally cool with that. He hates this picture and it annoys him when I put it up "all over the internet" (it's on my blog too) but I think it's cute! He just doesn't like the expression on his face. The goober on the left of the picture is Stratford, our Green Cheek Conure. The beauty on the right is Kaya, our Indian Ringneck. That's little Stratford at maybe 5 months old... just barely weaned, and only in our house for a few days. This was right after his first bath :-D He's one now... Does your conure like his baths, I have a sun conure who will bathe in her water bowl but if I take her to the bathroom to bathe her myself she hates it and tries her best to avoid it, don't you just love those little conures. zingarette Posted February 24, 2009 Author Share Posted February 24, 2009 Kaya is really light! She's silver, not grey... it's interesting. I've never seen another one with quite her coloring. Stratford loves baths. He comes into the shower with me, and sometimes we do "Birdie Hot Tub" which is the bathroom sink with a little warm water in it. That's his all-time fave. If I ask, "Hey Stratford, you wanna birdie hot tub?" he gets all excited and comes running. Too cute. I think conures are just universal little goobers! They are too sweet... I just love mine. He's my baby, and pretty much hates anyone but me. He'll perch on other people, but he lets them know that they're inferior. He's a butt... what can I say? It's all good though, because Kaya is freakishly bonded to my hubbie. I'm a good mode of transportation, but only if I'm going in his direction... at which point she'll jump off me and onto him. I agree with Judy about the cage size- get a larger cage because the bird will spend some time inside, any time you are both gone from home, on vacation, whatever. Anybody know where I can get a cage (I'm totally cool with used cages!!!) for super cheap? Either in Oregon or Idaho? Or online for cheaper than 100? I know, I know, I'm dreaming big, and it's a long shot. Still, anybody have any ideas? The cage we've got is only the minimum size requirements (since we were planning on using it only for sleeping)... and (thanks to the economy) we don't have a whole lot extra to spend...
