alizeh
Hello All, I just wanted to say hi to all you parrot loving people, and introduce myself. I'm Alizeh. I bought my first African Grey about 4 and a half months back, and told it was a male. So we named him Mr. Shah. When i first bought him he had a room of his own, but because of construction he had to be moved, he still had his own place but didn't seem too happy with it (apparently he really likes mirrors and wanted to be near one like he was before.) Then finally his cage was ready, it's massive he has many perches and bamboo perches, and of course a mirror. Since the cage is attached to the house from the outside, we get to look in at him all the time, and he love love love to come to the window and hang off the bars upside down or right side up and whistle in. However, going near him is a different matter all together. He puffs up and makes really loud angry noises. He wont come near me, or anyone else unless they have a peanut. He makes like he's going to bite you, but he doesn't really bite. 2 days ago i bought a baby african grey about 7.5 weeks old, which i had been waiting a while for. I don't know the sex but for now i guess i'll call it her. She's un-named so far. She's very loving and has a ferocious appetite. Every time she sees me she makes these soft cooing sounds and opens her mouth for food. I was told that you can't really overfeed them but i'd like to be sure. I've also started to ween her onto solids she seems to like mushy guava, she pecked at a cucumber slice and i'm about to try her with some soft boiled apple. She still has trouble eating as i don't think she knows how, she likes me to put things directly in her mouth. One of my dogs is absolutely in love with her and loves to lie around near her, she doesn't seem to mind this in any fashion. My german shepard seems to want to lick her all the time, so i dont let him near. I also have many love birds and 3 cockateel pairs, and an indian ring necked parrot. My love birds actually just had a baby of their very own. One out of three eggs hatched, and the parents seem to be doing a great job looking after the chick. The indian parrot is a beautiful green/blue colour he likes me, but doesn't allow the other birds near him. But the cage is plenty big for all of them to have their own space and little houses. Any advice would be so greatly appreciated. I'm really glad i found this forum to ask questions on an such, i think it's great. I'm kinda a newbie so anything comments, suggestions or advice would be welcomed. Thanks for reading this incredibly long post. xox, A
judygram
Hello Alizeh and welcome to the family, so glad you could join us and we look forward to hearing more about you and your two greys. It sounds like you really have your hands full with an almost adult grey and now a baby grey, each requires much time from you and the one is not really very friendly. Mr Shah seems to need a lot more work to make him more comfortble in his home, does he get any out of cage time? It sounds like he has not bonded with you yet but you will have to work on that and that takes time. Your new baby is the opposite right now for he is a baby and they are more willing to cuddle and will bond with you quicker because of that age. I would be careful of letting the dogs too near especially since one of them wants to lick it, dog saliva contains bacteria that could make the grey very sick or kill it but you need tosupervise any out of cage time when the dogs are around. Please read thru the many threads for lots of useful information and do ask questions you may have and we will help you in any way we can. If you have some pictures of these two greys you would like to share with us we would love to see them.
alizeh
hello and thank you for your reply Mr. Shah's cage is more like a room, it's about 7 feet high, 8 feet long and 3.5 feet wide. He wont let me take him out of there, as he doesn't let me all that near but i go in there to spend some time with him, he seem to like the back right corner the best so i dont go to near there, as i dont want to encroach on his [file] , but i do go in there and sing to him and feed him. Also we leave the door open but he doesn't come near it at all. Also there are windows that look into his cage from the living room, and while he like to listen to the people and the tv even if the windows are open he wont come in. He doesn't like the 2 of the dogs so i keep them away, but when the third, cleopatra goes up to the window he's very interested in her and leans down to say hello and makes friendly clucking sounds. I really really try to bond with him but sometime i just think he's happier is i dont try to touch him and just talk to him ad stuff from far. This is the same dog that the chick likes, she doesn't lick her but she'll put her nose night up to her and sniff at her feathers, and the chick seems to like the warm air and tries to nuzzle. I completely agree that it's too soon to leave them unsupervised with each other, i didnt know about the bacteria, so i wont let her do that any more, but Cleo is really sweet with the chick she'll stick her head in the box to make sure she's ok. As for the German shepard who only got in one lick at the feet, i'm really uncertain to trust him with a bird so i dont let him near ever, i mean one bite is all it takes and he could really eat the whole thing in one bite. I do have one question with if you could possibly help, when do you start showering your chick. Some times spoon feeding can be a little messy so i use a dry cloth to wipe up any excess, a very slightly damn cloth to get any stickyness off, and then a dry one again so she's not wet, is this wrong or bad? should i do something differently. judygram
As far as showering or bathing your baby I would wait until he/she is fully feathered. You can continue to do as you are with wiping off the formula and using a wet soft cloth to get the stuff while it is still wet and easier to remove, let it dry and it will be like trying to remove concrete. As far as posting pictures a lot of us use photobucket and put our photos there and then just put the link, you will find information in the photography room, there are two threads that deal with posting pics. judygram
You have a wonderful looking bunch of birds, love that Indian ring neck, such pretty colors. Your baby grey is precious also and if you get to that formula before it dries it comes off better. Thanks for sharing some pictures of your flock, they are all gorgeous. alizeh
Thank you so much, I was told about that and it made my life a great deal easier, but this time i really wanted to try to film her eating. He was a little dirty from where i got her, an i've been wiping her with soft damp cloths but i don't want to irritate her skin. The indian ring's name is pogo and he's very possessive of his immediate territory but he will on occasion come on your hand . The others in the big cage don't, but they love it when you sing to them. I'm in the cage taking these pics.
