Guest islandgirltexas
does anyone know what the weight of a baby congo african grey at 6 wks should be? he was an only child and breeder said he on the large side. i also am hand feeding with a syringe and i have done this before with another parrot many years ago and was successful, but i can never seem to get the crop full! he takes about 40 cc at each feeding and i never let the crop get empty...but i can never get it full like a ping pong ball..lol as the breeder did with a tube. so i am doing it every 2 hours to make sure he gets enough. his crop empties just fine..he is active and alert and his poops are good. any suggestions? judygram
I don't know personally, but wouldn't the breeder know about how much it should weigh? I would give him/her a call and ask. Maybe one of the other members knows more since I never had to handfeed one before. Good luck to you with your new one.
CeasarsDad
I think the only thing you need to be concerned is the weight gain. It would be impossible to tell what YOUR 6 week old weighs as they are so different from bird to bird.. So, I would start tracking the weight making sure you have a steady weight gain of a few grams every day or so.. You should be OK with this approach.. Guest islandgirltexas
well thank you...he weighs over 300 grams now..he is rather large and clumsy. breeder said the same thing..i just spoke with him finally..said he may get to be 600 grams or more. i raised a macaw and she was small..weighed 950 steady for 10 years. i just thought he was rather large and he is..hahhaa Post edited by: islandgirltexas, at: 2007/05/29 02:48

Post edited by: islandgirltexas, at: 2007/05/29 02:
CeasarsDad
I'm not sure he will make 600 but I don't see any problem with 500 grams.. Ceasar is also a large boy. He has been around 480 grams and recently went back up to over 500...
Guest briansmum
gosh 600 grams would be BIG for a grey you sound like you've got a big sturdy boy there islandgirl. brian averages about 450 grams on a morning (before he's been fed) but he's not even 4 months yet.
