PBFD (Psittacine Beak & Feather Disease)

I would like to write this in the memory of my sweet KOKI who died due to this viscious disease.

I got a second bird from the same shop, but the bird didnt look very healthy, so after doing the recommended DNA test, she was also positive for the same virus and destined to die due to the same disease...

I have done a lot of reading about it, and the more i read, the more angry I become, as there is no known treatment for this and it kills all baby grey birds.

They are working an a vaccine but nothing is final yet...

I am going through the process of disinfecting my home now in order to prepare to adopt a new bird, hoping that it will be a clean one now.

What I would like to say thay when i fell in love with the parrot and decided to look for one, I have read a little about them, but I was never prepared for this.

What disturbed me the most is the pet shop who bring in these ppor babies, exposing them to the visious virus which lingers everywhere in his shop and is prone to affect all birds that get in contact with it...

God Bless all those sweet creatures.

I'm really not sure whether you've gotten another parrot since the loss of both of the others but I would uggest you staying away from pet stores. There's loads of breeders out there but and many may be difficult to get to, but it's worth the trip.

It's better that you get a fully weaned bird so that the vet can check for dark spots and feather abnormalties. A fully weaned bird is easier to examine than an unweaned bird.

Thanks Dave for your advice, Ive had a long talk with the vet today as he explained to me how to disinfect my house and the bird cage.

I will start looking for a breeder and a bit older bird around one year old or so

Im really concerned for all the birds that the shop gets and dispenses...Im not sure if I can do anything for them...

I know you're concerned. So many here have seen poor quality birds in pet stores and it's heart breaking. This subject has been brought up at different times and I'll have to say it again--if you're a generally new parrot owner, it's best to turn your back on poor quality birds and find a decent, healthy bird because you'll have your hands full in dealing with a brand new baby bird and the last thing you wanna start off with is a sick bird which will distract you from all the proper methods of dealing with a new bird.

Hello...I lost my baby grey to PBFD yesterday it all happened so quickly and it is quite shocking! i still have all his things around the house and cant bring myself to putting them away. I took him to Nad Al Sheba Vet. Hospital and Dr. Guilio was very helpful unfortunately we couldn't do anything but put him to sleep. I would love to have another grey but i am too traumatized with the experience and i wouldnt trust any pet store! so Faisal if you could please give me the details of the breeder? or if anyone knows someone giving up their grey for adoption?

Thanks a lot,

Noor
