First off I think you are doing the right thing by taking her.. At first she might be afraid of the car ride but as time passes she will realize there is nothing to be afraid of.. I don't use a travel cage when I take Ceasar out. Ceasar loves sitting on my shoulder in the car.. You might want to try this and see how your bird like it..

When you arrive, where will you keep your bird? Are you also travelling with the full size cage?

Post edited by: CeasarsDad, at: 2007/05/22 03:33

i just got sonia and we are not that quite comfortable with one another. it will even be a task to get her into the traveling cage. we were thinking of breaking down the cage and set it up somewhere in my inlaws house. the house is real posh and im not sure how they will feel about having her in their house.??????

when i first got her, she rushed into the cage we had ready for her. so i didnt have to bother with transfering her then. i have heard of the towe method and i think that i will have to use that to get her in and out of the cages. the previous owner told me that he had to use te towel at first so, im hoping that she would be accustomed to it.

im nervous and i hope that she will be ok during the ride down.

She should be just fine, I have taken my grey for a 4+ hour ride one way and she did good. I use a collapsible travel cage for her and put a few toys and something to snack on and some water. It would be good for her if you can take her along.

OK, if your bird isn't quite that tame yet.. I'm not sure sticking her in a travel cage for 10 plus hours is the best thing for either of you.. Perhaps you should call around local bird stores and have her boarded.. The trauma you could cause from the 10 hour ride might be more then the trauma caused by boarding her..

Hey guys. What's your opinion on all this....

Yeah CD you might be right on this the 10hour drive would stress the Grey out more than Boarding him/her. When I got my grey Max I had to take him to work everyday because I had to spoon feed him. At first he did not like being in the transport box, then we took him out and held on to him because we were afraid that he might start flying in the car. He did not like it to be held tight or firmly so I told my fiance to put a towel on her lap and let him just stand on her lap and don't hold him. And yeah he was very good he just stood there and checked out the scenery. But the drive to work is only 1hour 15min. But what I wanted to say is evryday he got more use to being in the car and driving.

Hmmm, how long have you had her? How old is she? Is her eating at least stable etc? Either taking her along or leaving her/boarding her will be a stress if she is young and still adjusting to new home/owners...Best to not change environment much for a few months with a new bird until some trust is built. However, if the trip is going to happen either way I would probably vote to bring her along. Show her its ok. Try not to be nervous, that will only make her nervous as well. Whatever you do, tell her its OK and more importantly show her its OK through your own confidence.

In general exposing them to new things (car rides, new places etc) is very good. However, you dont want to overload them if they are really still making a major adjustment to new home/owners...Good luck. Things will probably be fine, ;) Keep us posted!
