Over comming the "Devil Harness"!!!

Bandit and I have finally overcome the "Devil Harness"!! It took about 3 weeks constantly, everyday playing with the harness and him

We have gone outside several times due to the fact we are having unusually warm weather for this time of year, around 60-70 degrees!! Usually there is a couple feet of snow.

We made our first short trip into our small town to get a few things from the grocery store yesterday. He was woderful.

I do have to watch him because if he thinks I am not looking he has figured out how to unhook his harness, and he enjoys chewing on it (of which I stop as soon as I start).

 • 1 month later...

I to have been harness training my cag for a couple of weeks now. I've been out in the garden a few times but not for long, as i don't want to push Skye to far to soon, although she seems fine!

She also has a habit of biting the harness which im trying to teach her not to.

Skye is nearly 6 months old and Im really pleased with how she is coming along.

We are working with the harness with Spencer. We lay it over his neck and laugh and laugh. The first time we laid it on him, he immediately started making the noise that he makes when he doesn't want to do something and tried to get it off. We started laughing, and he stopped trying to get it off and making that noise! Now when we put it over him, he only makes that noise for a few seconds (we still laugh)! Today we put the wing hole over his head, and it went very well B)

Bandit has gotten a lot better about chewing on her harness. I just put her in it and take her immediatly outside.

I took her to town with me the other day and met my dad at Jamba Juice (for those who don't know it's a place that makes fruit smoothies, mmmmmm). We sat outside and chatted and Bandit hung out and played with an extra straw and only tried to chew on her harness once and that was it. YEAH!!

Post edited by: bandits_mom08, at: 2009/03/08 05:56

I am another one who is working on the devil harness. Nearly 2 months now trying to train both of them. I have it over their heads and resting on the back, rubbing it all over their body and under the wings. It has taken many sessions and lots of treats. Next step to try and get it fully on, which I am afraid they will freak and fly off so I have to take it very slowly.

We are finally past the protest stage (not that there was much of one after she was used to the harness). She is also not chewing on the harness except when the leash gets in her way.

I have now encountered another problem with the harness. We have spent much more time outside now that the weather has decided to turn nice, for the time being. We have gone to town and met friends for lunch and she gets to watch all of the camotion outside with us. She absolutlly loves it.

Now when we are done outside and come back into the house or leave the places we have been at and go to take the harness off, the fight is on!!

When we come into the house I take the harness off and she stays with me on my shoulder for a while before she goes to her cage. When we leave from having lunch I can't just let her roam around the car so she goes into her travel cage.

She doesn't want to have it taken off. Does anyone have any ideas how to make this any easier??

Wow she doesn't want to have it taken off - in other words she doesn't want the adventure to end yet or she doesn't like you fiddling with it once it's on her?

I'm also working with my Alex (5 months old). I have the Premier Feather Tether and I have it completely unhooked and just hold it draped on his back every day for short periods to get used to the weight and the feel, giving lots of praise when he holds still. I tried to hook the neck part but he fought and got away from me twice. He's badly clipped so I had to catch him in the air to avoid injury. I'm proceeding much slower now...

By the way, what temperature do you think is warm enough to take him outside?

From what I understand their body temps. are quite a bit highter than ours I think some where around, I want to say between 98-103(if someone knows exactly it would be great to know.). Beings there body temp is higher it won't feel quite as cold.

I have been taking Bandit out in about 60-65 and we stay in the sun for the most part. I don't take her out if the wind is blowing. She seems to enjoy herself.

If there is anyone who has a better idea on what temp to take them out in I would love to know too.
