Guest briansmum
i've been hand feeding brian since i got him and wrked his feeds down from twice to once a day. the breeder said that by the time the food he supplied me with had run out brian wold be fully weaned. however now theres only about 2 days worth of feed left and he still seems very dependant on his dinner time feed. rather than getting more baby food i thought i could get a blender or a masher and mush up some veggies and pulses and spoon feed him this at dinner time untill he is onto solids completely. would this work? splint101
That is what I am doing now. I am mixing some mushed up veggies and mix it with the formula. Then I will feed him this formula till it is finnished. But I am trying to let him eat it on his own out of a bowl. This way it will learn him to help himself. :woohoo:

Post edited by: splint101, at: 2007/05/21 23:
Guest briansmum
yes i think i will do that too as he isn't actually really eating his solid food so much as chewing up into mush and dropping it about. though i dipped a carrot stick n some unsweeted peanut butter today and after shaking his head a bit and getting all sticky he ate a good bit of the carrot, so i was pleased. ZoesDad
Hi beccy, Though Zoe is completely weaned, I still like to hand feed her goodies at my own meal times. I think mushing up your bird's food is a good idea (they seem to love soft foods). You may also want to try warming it up a little (to about 98F) for some extra encouragement. Guest Monique
Sounds like you've got some good advice from people who have tried similar things. I would just be sure to keep an eye on his weight, and that you know where to get more formula should you find out you wish or need to extend his evenings feedings after all .... judygram
As one suggestion you could microwave a tiny bit of oatmeal with a little water then add some baby food to make a warm meal.

Guest briansmum
so today i cooked some carrot, sweetcorn and apple smushed it up an mixed it with a bit of his baby food and fed it off a spoon rather that a syringe. boy did it go down!! i was really pleased, thats the most veggies he's had. i just have to work on getting him to eat them without the baby food now
splint101
Glad to hear that it worked for you to. What you need to do is cut down about every 2nd feed on the baby food and go more veggies and mash it less so the food is more coarse. And try to let him eat it on his own after a couple of these coarse feeds. By then he would be use to the more coarse food & solids. This is wat I am trying now. Guest
Beccy, doesn't it depend on the kind of veggies he eats? (I'm asking this cause I don't know)
Guest briansmum
yes probably.. but any veggie is better than no veggie! i am going vary the veggies i use, but i'm pleased he's eating any at all at th moment

Guest briansmum
right.. well then.. i'e finally got Brian eating food out of the bowl on his own, but he seems to only want to eat warm soft food, which is fine as i've just got some zupreem weaning nuggets that i can soak to make them soft and mix it with cooked veggies. he can't have weaning pellets forever though. does anyone know any really good pellet mixes or anything that can be softened and warmed? if such a thing exists. i am still putting his seeds and pulses in his bowl throughout the day but he's not really eating them. i'll continue to try him with harder foods, but at the moment it's got to be soft or he doesn't get ehough. Guest Monique
Hi beccy. What is a pulse? Can you just take regular Zupreem pellets and soak them in fruit juice to start moving him to those? It would be better to get him weaned to pellets vs. seeds as that is a more complete diet. Then seeds could be used as a treat.
Guest briansmum
i was given a seed and pulse mix by the breeder, the pulses you have to soak before feeding them till they sprout, but theyre not soft. he said he feeds all his birds on this, they are all regularly checked by the vet and he has said this mix with fruit and veggies is a good complete diet. i know that seeds aren't the best for the bird but apparently the pulses are.. but brian does not like them anyway so it doesn't really matter  . i wasn't sure if normal pellets would go softer when soaked? if they do can anyone reccomend a really good one to me please? Tari
My grey is 8 years old and still gets warm food from a spoon. When I have babies to handfed she gets the left overs once a day still. This is a good thing if I have have to medicate it well be easier.
