What kind is this?

Sorry, taking out the pic cause it was apparently huge! See the one below please...

It was already cut to less than half when originally posted! Seemed fine on my 26" ViewSonic.

Post edited by: Falconeer, at: 2009/01/15 14:01

That's a blue front all right...Congrats!!! They are one of my favorite amazons. One thing that is cool about them is that each one will look different. Some have more blue, some have more yellow, and some have more white.

Amazons need the same type of care as a Grey...they are loving, very smart, extremely curious, and need an owner that can keep them in check. Many blue fronts can get aggressive when they hit sexual maturity, but training can help keep a lid on the worst of their behavior.

I resized the pic for ya'.

Okay, so I have a Blue Amazon yay!

Guys, all I know is as much as you can see in the pic...

Name: none

Age: 4-5 mos

Still hand-fed. He slept all night after I got him home then at 8 am I went to work after feeding him 20 mL. Then I came home early from work today at 3:30 and fed him this time he took about 40 mL. If he is not hungry he refuses. Now he is playing

I wanna know how much to feed him at this age. Any feeding guides available?

And lets all pick a name for him/her!

Casper, this country sucks when it comes to birds. Anyways, the guy told me he was on two feeds per day. When he is not hungry he does not even open his beak, just turns away.

I had my gray eat corn with me from the same bowl he then tried to have some as well. Will keep trying but for now two feeds per day about 40 mL each.

20 to 30ml is a good amount for his age...the best way of knowing how much is the right amount is to feel the crop. if it's firm you've fed too much. It should feel like a water balloon, not too firm where is has a bit of play but full. At his age he should be getting ready to drop a feeding, the morning would be the next to go. If he refuses food then don't give it too him...that's a very good sign they are wanting to eat on their own. Amazons can ge hard to wean at times, I've had a number of baby yellow napes give us a run for our money weaning, so it can be tricky. Using your baby grey as an example will go a long way, if the Blue Front sees the grey eating something good then he might want to get in on it too. Offer as much veggies, friuts, and pellets as you can because Amazons need much more fresh foods and less seeds and nuts as the greys. They get fat a LOT quicker than other parrots and get fatty liver which will kill them. That is the one HUGE advantage you have weaning him, you can get him on the perfect diet before he ever gets hooked on sunflower seeds.

One more thing on weaning. Before a morning feeding, offer him veggies, cooked beans and pasta and see if he will dig in to that first. If he dives right in at his age you can drop the morning feeding. I believe that the Blue Front wean around 16 weeks but 18 to 20 is probably more what you should aim for. I would keep giving him 20 to 30ml at night for a few more weeks and then test the waters again for dropping the night feeding. The best way for that would be to watch him on your days off and see how often he is in the food bowl. If he is a pig and eats everything you put in front of him then just delay the night feeding and see if he really wants it or not given the choise of fresh veggies...if he digs in he's good.;)

I got an amazon a few months back. He is so much fun! Didn't know what to name him so we picked out a few ourselves and asked everyone else for their ideas. Then had a naming contest for him with the top names we liked. The vote came in and his name is now Cooper. I love the name and it wasn't even on our original list. I would suggest having a contest to name him/her if you are undecided. :) It was exciting for us when we did it.

I like latin names like Berna...one of my favs is Dominic (a friend of mine is pregnant and that is one on her list).

All of mine had names already when they came into my home but if I had my choice I would pick Starbuck (boy or girl) or Apollo (boy).

I like the idea of a contest too...you'd get tons to choose from and see what fits for you and him.

P.S. Took the kids to the zoo today and they had an DYH Amazon named Turkey (he makes turkey sounds and literally screams "HELLO!"). Not that I'm recommending that name...just thought it was funny! :-)

Hahaha...we have a Cuban Amazon at the store named Turkey, but he's named that because he looks like a Turkey!

This isn't Turkey but I figured I would show you all what he looks like.:P
