Various Uses of Red Palm Oil

PrettyPax

Recommended Posts

I was just learning about the benefits of Red Palm oil, as it is an essential part of a Grey's diet in the wild. I'm curious as to how other Grey owners administer it to their bird. In the food? As a shampoo? My curiosity is peaked and I'd like to get some. I'm just not sure of the proper way to use it.

Sorry, I know this topic has been posted before. I'm still a relative newbie. Thanks.

Lauren, I put it in my grey's morning oatmeal, I cook a small amount of oatmeal in the microwave then add a spoonful or two of some baby food vegetables such as carrots, squash or sweet potatoes then I add about 1/4 teaspoon of red palm oil and mix thoroughly. She gobbles it up greedily and my sun conure eats a little of it too, I administer it with a small spoon, she rakes it off with her beak.

You can order it from www.swansonsvitamins.com as that is about the cheapest online place to find it and it keeps for a long time since you use such a small amount at a time.

You can also cook with it but it does have a strong flavor than regular cooking oil and of course it has a reddish color, may not be appetizing depending on what you use it for.

I mix mine in with whatever I cook for their evening meal, or spread a little on a small piece of toast (occassionally mixed in with a dab of peanut butter), or fortunately if I just put a bit (1/4 tsp) on the edge of their food dishes mine will all eat it up.

Pchela - This is what my vet used to recommend with Sunshine Factory (RPO)...If you want to mix it in with pellets or seed, you can put it in a cup of hot water (not boiling) to "melt" it a little. Then you can pour it over the seed/pellet/whatever and then stir it around and it will coat pretty nicely. Make sure it's cooled off before you give it to them.
