platinumparrot
Just wanted to introduce myself. I'm Lisa, proud mom to three wonderful Cags......Sydney, Stirling and Dear Emma Lynn. I have been living with greys for 18 years, and other species for almost 33. I'm the founder of a few clubs in my area, and owner of The Platinum Parrot, a specialty supply store, trying to bring some education, nutrition and enrichment to the shore in my state. I do NOT sell any birds, and work along side rescues to find older birds the homes they so desperately need. hiya to old and new friends alike. judygram
Hello Lisa and welcome to the family, so glad you could join us and we look forward to hearing more about you and Sydney, Stirling and Dear Emma Lynn. Wow you have had greys for 18 years and other birds for almost 33, I think that qualifies you to be sort of an expert in my opinion. I am a member of a bird club in my area too, nice that you could start some in your area for they are a big help to us with our birds and we have some fun in the process. We have a lot of threads with useful information but I doubt that you need it, you could probably tell us some things we don't already know but you are welcome to read thru them for bits and pieces. Glad to hear you work along side rescues as you are so right, there is such a need for it. If you have some pictures of your three greys you would like to share with us we would love to see them. platinumparrot
Thank you very much for the warm welcomes! I mainly log onto the forums while there is a downtime at the shop. I have had 6 greys all together. 2 I lost to Aspergillosis and or the effects of the early meds to treat the disease. My first was a wild caught timneh. He was a wonderful companion who blossomed with love and compassion. He came up for adoption through my club and was deemed "fiesty, Nasty and couldnt be held without a glove" Otis, never saw a glove with me and started me on discovering just how intellegent they really are. With that came Sampson Bell. He was the little love of my life. He accompanied me all over and we went to schools, town events and memorials together. We taught people how to properly take care of parrots, and how they interact with people. He was jokingly made the mascot for the Army Aviation National Guard unit #2, because he stole more attention then the helicopters that my husband would fly into for public events. Then there was the day my life changed.Sampson was diagnosed with Asper. In desperation, I wrote to Dr Pepperberg because I knew Alex had survived the disease. That started my friendship with Dr P, and me becoming a volunteer & helping with fundraising for the foundation. Sadly,Otis and Sampson both passed on due to asper. When Sam's little light left me, I located a little baby in NYS that was for sale. My husband (then boyfriend) surprised me with him and an engagement ring that christmas. So, Sydney, now 6, came home. Then shortly after that I was told of a disabled cag looking for a special home. I contacted the breeder and talked about bringing her home. Unfortuatly my father got ill, and he couldnt live at home anymore. I took his two greys to live with me. Bubba, never liked me. He made that quite clear growing up. Tho I did not want to place him, I needed to make sure he was happy as well. He would not have been happy in my home. After a few months of him being there, I was able to have a friend who also knew my dad, take him in. Bubba is very happy in his home, and he is very loved. Stirling, my fathers other grey, remains a cherished member of my family. He is in his mid to late 20's. With the two greys coming in, I did not have room for the disabled grey, so she sadly was put on the back burner. I kept intouch with the breeder, and sent toys so the bird would feel like she was loved. Turns out after 9 months with the breeder, Miss Emma Lynn came home to live her life out with me. So thats the story of my beloved family.

Post edited by: platinumparrot, at: 2009/01/08 23:
