splint101 Posted May 16, 2007 Share Posted May 16, 2007 Congo African Grey parrot, Psittacus erithacus erithacus - these are larger birds (about 12 inches/30cm long) with light grey feathers, cherry red tails and black beaks. A Congo is often called a "CAG". Timneh African Grey parrot, Psittacus erithacus timneh - these are smaller in size, have a darker charcoal gray coloring, a darker maroon tail, and a light, horn coloured upper mandible. A Timneh is often called a "TAG". dblhelix Posted May 16, 2007 Share Posted May 16, 2007 CAG stands for Congo African Grey and they are considered the nominate (or main) species. TAG stands for Timneh African Grey and this is a subspecies. The CAGs and TAGs are from different parts of Africa and there have been other "sub" species mentioned as well based on geographic location. However CAGs and TAGs are the two main species referenced today. In fact, on a true biological level I believe they are the same "species" as they can interbreed. However in the wild this is rare due to geographical constraints hence they are generally considered sub-species. CAGs are usually larger than TAGs with a red tail and a black beak while the TAGs have a darker maroon tail and bone colored beak. There also are some differences in the "grey" colors/patterns of the feathers. Both make great pets and overall probably have more similarities than differences. Guest briansmum Posted May 16, 2007 Share Posted May 16, 2007 i have read that TAG's can be more sociable and accepting of changes and thus can be a better choice as a family bird where as CAG's can get more attatched to one owner, their main carer, though thats debatable if you socialise them early. Talon Posted May 16, 2007 Share Posted May 16, 2007 I have read alot about that as well. We have a tag and she is certainly pretty good at being social. She does seem to accept alot of traffic that is entering my house. She will stick close to me at first, but then will relax very quickly. Talon Posted May 17, 2007 Share Posted May 17, 2007 They stay dark until around 6-7 months, then they will lighten. They will then turn greenish/ yellow. Now Talons are grey, and she is 19 months ols. I understand they will turn blue, but I'm not sure at what age they do that.
