Tycos_mom
I finally got Gizmo to step up from his cage. I almost fell over when he did it and boy did I give him a ton of praise. I do have to get his wings clipped though he was in my bedroom with me and he was on my shoulder. and my Pappion decided to jump up on the bed well It spooked Gizmo and he flew around the room a couple time and landed on Tyco's cage. Thank goodness Tyco is used to other birds and treats them as flock members so I just said no Tyco don't hurt him and I went over and stepped Gizmo back up onto my arm he was still a little shaken because of the dog and I got a bit of a bite but nothing serious and he soon settled back down again. I hope it doesn't set him back its so great that he is stepping up for me I don't want him to go backwards just because that silly dog always wants to play.

Post edited by: Tycos_mom, at: 2008/12/11 06:

LindaMary
Yay Gizmo! You know what, Pat? Every time i feel like you are just about to give up and do something drastic, Gizmo crosses another threshold. Have you noticed that, or is my perception out of whack? I feel like he really wants to please you, and can feel it when you are at the end of your frustration range with him. I am so pleased to hear this news. Good going! Tycos_mom
Mabie your right I just about get to the point where I think he's never going todo anything except stay in that cage for the rest of his life. I still have to coax him out of his cage but that doesn't take to much as soon as I get the water sprayer out to give him a misting he will come out of his cage so I can give him a bath. for the last 2 day I have been getting a towel out and as soon as he see the towel he flys off of his cage and once he's off his cage he will step up no problem but today I didn't even have to get the towel I said step up and he jumped right onto my arm. I think he's starting to realize that he gets allot more attention from me if he will come with me and sit where I want to be. anyway he will step up from The top of any cage now e was sitting on the travel cage next to me today and as soon as i asked he jumped onto my arm. And like I said he flew over to Tyco's cage today after the dog spooked him and he stepped right up off Tyco's cage also mind you he stepped up to quickly because he was scared and used his beak to grab first and got my skin a bit. he didn't bite me hard enough to break the skin but it hurt a lot I didn't react though because I knew if was out of fear not because hhe meant to bite me so I just clenched my teeth and proceeded to calm him down. He 's going to be okay I think. I try to make it fun for him when he comes with me and he really seems to enjoy his time away from his cage. I think thats why he stepped up today he starting to understand that there is more to life then being locked up. I'm really glad I started pushing him a bit again. I hope he will continue to go forward now.

cflanny
Congrats Pat I just love these updates. I have shown Gismos pics to my hubby from the beginning he said "wow what a difference but you can sure tell it the same bird his sweetnees shines through." He thought he looked so sweet even in his first pics and he knew he was gonna be a great bird. I thought this was a great perception cause poor Gismo looked so scared to me in the first pics but now he is just beautiful and sweet ) Again you are a angel!! karma to you ! Tycos_mom
Thank you for the nice comments Its just trial and error with Gizmo he's so different than any of my other birds. Even though Tyco was also cage bound it was totally different I knew what I could do with her she laid out her boundrys and I didn't cross them with Gizmo the lines are not so cut and dry he wants to be a pet and wants me to scritch his head but he gets nervous about it then changes his mind at the last minute. He really needs that little push to get over his nervousness. then one he does somthing a couple times he's ok with it. Its hard because I don't know where to stop. Like I said its trial and error with him.
LindaMary
I totally get you, Pat, on the "c'm 'ere, c'm 'ere, go 'way, go'way" issue! I do wonder if it's a macaw thing that every macaw owner knows about, this split-personality behavor? And do teh bigger macaws act like this, too? Like you said: I pretty much know where Max stands on things at any given time : she's either having a good day or a bad day, and she knows what she wants and doesn't want and she makes it clear. Sometimes I think Tanner changes his mind every time he turns his head. "I'm goofy - no, I'm cuddly - no, I'm spooked - no, I'm clowny - no, I'm obsessively preening - no, I'm {fill-in-the-blank}" I would love to see how Tanner and Gizmo would react to each other if they met. Maybe I can figure out how to do a YouTube video (with Mary's help) so you can watch it sometime with Gizmo...
Tycos_mom
I can't beleive that Tanner is like that also they really are a strange little bird so indesisive makes me wonder how they've ever survived in the wild. They are really sweet friendly birds and I just love Gizmo to death because he so cute and loveing he just doesn't know what he wants. Or mabie it just seems that way.
