Kaedyn
I am so excited! I've always known that cockatoos had a nasty bite, but I'd never experienced it for myself. Well as of last night, that has changed. I was playing with a 5 month old lesser sulphur crested. She really wanted to sit on my shoulder and I wouldn't let her, so she decided to put the squeeze on my soft flesh. Let's just say that I'll take a bite from any adult grey before I'd take another from a baby cockatoo. They are *very* strong and it's the shape of their beak that really does you in. They also don't just bite and release. They like to maintain their grip and try to squeeze even more. That fun aside, she was a beautiful bird and her feathers were extremely soft. But, I definitely wouldn't recommend the cockatoo to first time parrot owners or anyone with young children. In case you were wondering, I survived with just a minor flesh wound. It's not the first time I encountered the beak, just the first one attached to a cockatoo. It was my fault and I knew what I was getting into. Luvparrots
Ouch!!! So are you thinking of adding a cockatoo to your flock? I luv them but that beak has always worried me. Glad you are fine.

casper
OOOoh painful! Is this a bird you have been to see to add to your flock? Or does it belong to someone you know? I think I will stick with the greys! I can cope with a grey bite! Glad you are ok. Caroline.
Kaedyn
I was really just picking up some supplies at a local pet store which has a great bird habitat. I know the staff there fairly well and I just can't help but play with all the new babies. There was the cockatoo, two macaws (barely feathered), and five conures. It's a dangerous thing to do, not for my physical well being, but for the well being of my wallet. It's hard to escape the clutches of a cute bird. I won't say it'll never happen, but a cockatoo isn't in my foreseeable future. I managed to escape without doing anything stupid, but I did ever so slightly injure the wallet to pick up a neat birdie tent. I'll have to post some pictures. Tycos_mom
I love cockatoo I had a Citron crested Too for awhile but I couldn't keep him he was 20+ years old and not used to children or other birds. Everytime he was out and my daughter was at home he would attack her and bite down hard he wasn't a baby and he could really bite. her arms where cut and bruised for weeks. I loved him and he was so gentle and sweet with me but anyone else around was not tolerated. I did not think it was fair to him to keep him locked in a room by himself so I found him a wonderful home with a single older woman that had lost her citron crested male after 30 years I new she would give him the home he needed so I gave him to her. SchroedersJen
Glad to hear you are still intact. I have a part time job at a bird store and havent been bitten by a cockatoo yet. Id rather stuff my pinky finger in a macaw beak then my wrist in that of a 2. you make me a bit less scared though. I heard that its not all that uncommon for adult toos to take chunks out of their favorite people. YIKES! next time wear a shark suit.
Lanibird
This post caught my eye, since I too recently received my first TOO bite! I guess Rocky got up in a frumpy mood, but the sneaky devil lured me in with that come-hither look of his and I leaned in to kiss his beak and, well....that little so and so bit my bottom lip.....OUCH! micahthegrey
Cool! Glad you're okay...I have two cockatoos and a grey but I have never been bitten hard by either. Notice I said hard, they like to nibble! Hi, I'm new.
BaxtersMom
Lanibird, I got it on the lip before too. By my eclectus. He is such a snuggler and a lover which made me let my guard down. He was just looking up at me with those cute beady eyes and all sudden I had a bird attached:ohmy: I carried a red imprint of a beak on my bottom lip for a week!!! Thank god for lipstick! I laugh about it now but know it could have really been a serious injury.
Lanibird
Hey BaxtersMOM! OMG it really hurt although I know it was not a serious "I'm mad at you" bite, because if he wanted to he could literally rip my lip off. My grey bit me once too, when she started to slip of her perch in the shower, I gathered her up and wanted to reassure her and she bit me. I guess she felt it was my fault !! It's OK though, I'm still in one peice and love my birdies more than ever! Rocky has never shown aggression ever, but he gets ruffled every now and then like anyone I guess. Funny how they can lure us in with those shiny little eyes!!! :-D
