SchroedersJen
We are going to be rescuing a Senegal this month, and are looking for a great cage. The one his owners have been keeping him in is a canary cage, and we want to make sure he has something really fantastic and as large as is reasonable for him to move around and play in. He is a great bird and we aren't concerned about behavioral issues (yet), we just want him to have tons of room to play. Can anyone suggest a decent sized cage, I'm not sure what bar spacing is appropriate, and we dont want to over do it and get something so large that he doesn't feel secure. Also, do these guys prefer a pan of water to bathe in or to hang out in the shower with their humans? Any other nifty senegal tips would be appreciated. I will attempt to muddle through all the stuff we can find online about these guys, I'm just always concerned about the sources being accurate. Thanks again! Tycos_mom
Yhats great that you are taking in a new bird I hear that senaguls are wonderful. I know this one bird that knows so many tricks. Apperently they are quite protective of their favorite human so you will have to make sure that you socialize him with the whole family so he doesn't get overly protective with one person. As for cage size I would say 5/8 bar spacing should be the highest you should go for these little guys. and Probubly minumum size should be 32"x24"X36"high With a little bigger being better. Lupa
I dont know about Senegals but we just got a baby Jardine Parrot which is also part of the Poicephalus family, just larger than the Senegal. We have a big conure cage, with lots of horizontal bars for climbing. Rossi sits in the shower with me. He and my CAG had a similar reaction to water in birdie bath, they hate it! Good luck with your rescue!
SchroedersJen
Thanks We brought the new bird home tonight, we haven't picked out a new name for him yet. We did get a pretty cool cage for him, and he was friendly with everyone in his last family, so we are hoping that socializing him here won't be too much harder than our TAG. The birds seem to be very curious about eachother, contact calling from across the house, it will be super cool when he is allowed out of quarantine. We will post some pictures soon! Thanks agian for the help and suggestions!

SchroedersJen
This little bird is quick, let me tell you, we had to bust out the high speed capera to get some shots of him and he is still blurry. arghh. His feathers are starting to look a bit better now that he is being fed properly and he has a healthy preen gland. After his next molt, he should be a very cute little senegal. His green patches have little yellow feathers all throughout, and he looks kinda nerdy. It makes us say awwwwwwwwwww every time he puffs up. It looks like hubby will be naming him Buddy. I should have some pics up in a couple of days as soon as I figure out how to photoshop out some of the blurry.....I'm not sure it can be done. I'll cross my fingers and do a hail mary before getting started on that project. We did get the lab results back from the vet ytesterday and he is very healthy. Now tthat he has met Schroeder, it seems the bloom is off the rose. Buddy keeps picking fights with Schroeder which ended in Schroeder climbing on a perch overhanging his boing and pooping on Buddy as he attempted to break into Schroed's territory from below. Providing you arent Buddy, it's pretty funny.

Lyric
Congratulations on your new Senegal. I have a couple of Senegals and I think they are really neat birds. They are very quiet too as far as parrots go. I hope him and Schroeder can become friends in time.
