Tracie232
Tucker is 8 weeks old and I hold and snuggle him a lot, is this ok?? I do put him on the bottom of his cage on and off but most of the time he is with me. How often should I hold him? and how long can he be in his cage? I won't lie I haven't been able to get any house work done due to holding him. I have a towel on the bottom of his cage and his toy's are way down so he can play as well as his perch and he is perching now. My house is a wreak and the laundry is so backed up. I have read so much how fast AG's can get nippy and thats why I hold him all morning, afternoon, and evening.
Dave007
Well, first off, you got a bird that technically shouldn't have been sold because it wasn't totally weaned. Most of the time, that's the breeder's fault. So, if your bird was still back with all the other birds, there would be natural snuggling going on. So you've taken over that period of time concerning the natural snuggling. You're the one that has to provide right now. A bird will go through stages and a fully weaned bird will be more adventurous than an unweaned baby. Right now, it doesn't require much because all it's interested in is eating and snuggling and if you totally stop, that's not good. But you can gradually cut down on that right now so you can get housework done. The bird might whimper, look sad, be less active but that goes away as soon asthe physical attention starts over again. You'll see that as the bird gets older, one of the most important things that will be required is physical contact. That contact will naturally lessen as the bird gets older because that's the type of bird it is. Right now, it's in the snuggle mode. 16 mts from now, your bird will want to beleft alone because there's too many things to check out and build an interest in. An adult grey is not a snuggly bird. Carolyn
Dave is so right Tracie, we got Mika at 3 months and all he wanted was to snuggle and be held, played by him self a little but the main thing was being very close to me. Now at 8 months:evil: he is happier spending a lot of time on his play gym and stand ripping, tearing, throwing and destroying every toy that he considers his and some things that are not but within his reach. He still in the evening just before bed loves his snuggles then a bedtime story and off to bed. But my little boy is growing up and so will Tucker, so enjoy it while you can;) Carolyn & Mika
HeatherStrella
I have found my bird to be the opposite. When I first got her, she wasn't very cuddly. She seemed to enjoy contact, but no snuggling. I've always been envious of owners who have such loving little birdies. As AnnaBella got older, she became more interested in me and less interested in her toys and such. Now she prefers to be on me when she's out of her cage. She's not all cuddly, but she insists on being on me...I too hold her and walk around the house. I hold things between my knees, do things left handed, and spill stuff all the time!! But I love it!! allena
Try putting your bird on a perch in the room where you`re working. Talking to him as you go with an occasional treat followed by Good Boy. It`s hard for me to help people sometimes because our birds are on playstands in the living roomand the only time they`re caged is for bedtime. Occasionally we bring them into the kitchen or another room where we are working.
Luvparrots
Hi Tracie, congratulations on your new baby. My Ana Grey is now 5 months old and will sit nicely on her perch in whichever room I am in. I have several around the house. They are loving and cuddly when they are young and such a joy to cuddle. Tucker sounds like a very cute grey. Hope to see some pictures soon.
bandits_mom08
my TAG is the same way as Heatherstrella's. He is about 8 months old and if he is out of his cage he had to be on me. House work is an interesting chore. As she said things fall get spilt but, I too, love it. There are even nights that I have to lock him in his cage cause he thinks he needs to help with dinner! she
Oh they do like the atenttion,my Charlie is right now sitting on me ,trying to get attention. Some times I have no option but to put him in the cage with toys and food treats so I can get thing done. I think it is good for them to understand that is is time to play on there own for a while.
casper
I find it difficult having three of them. If i take one of my shoulder and put them back on the stand another will see it as an invitation for them to come and sit there instead:P
LisaM
I hear ya Caroline! My three are the same way. We have had to come up with our own version of parrot-juggling! (no, rest assured all this has nothing to do with tossing them in the air over each other!). And I think they know if anyone gets more mommy-time than anyone else. :-)
