I locked Gizmo out of his cage and let him sit on top of it for about 1/2 an hour then I brought my Little IRN out he absoululty love me to pet him so I started petting him in front of Gizmo. Then I left for another 1/2 hour with gizmo still locked out of his cage I went back and cupped my hand above his head and slowly moved my hand closer closer to the top of his head doing a slight rocking motion with my hand and I finally reached the top of his head and started giving him scritches He started to really enjoy it and I scritched his face and neck and everywhere how bout that I new all I had to do is get him out of that darn cage for a while mabie pretty soon I'll try step ups.:woohoo: :silly:  :

I think He would step up now but I just got him to come out of his cage and sit on top he's going to need another couple days of being comfortable on top of his cage before he's going to allow me to take him off of it. Scritches are one thing leaving that cage is like his world is coming to an end so for him to step up is going to take some ingenuity on my part I'm going to have to distract him with one hand while I scoop him up with the other with out getting biten in the process he's only bit me once hard enough to break the skin. he likes to play with my fingers. when I offer a walnut or a peanut he always takes my finger into his beak before he takes the treat he doesn't bite though just seems to like to beak me first. Some people might be intimadated by it and I think thats why he does it but I don't budge so he doesn't win mabie thats why he's comeing around fairly quickly I don't cower to his bluffing. I've only had him for 2 weeks I would say thats almost a record. Mind you I think you may beat that record with Cooper he's only been with you about a week and he's already stepping up for you. You'll be petting him within the next day or two I'm sure. Try the way I did'it with Gizmo its a trick I learned from the Bird whisperer Keep your fingers tight together and cup them over his head slowly move your hand closer and closer rocking your hand at the same time when you get close enough put your thumb down on his head and start scritching a bit and then add the rest of your fingers to the scritching and there you have it.

Post edited by: Tycos_mom, at: 2008/11/12 02:13

I'll have to take some new pictures of Gizmo for sure He is so beautiful these day his feathers just shine. The only problem I have with taking pictures is that he's terrified of the camera I think its the flash mostly so I have to stand way back a zoom in on him other wise he crouches down and puffs his feathers. I will try and see what I can do. I have to recharge my batteries first so I'll try to get some good pics tomorrow. He really is looking gorgous these days. daily baths are really doing wonders for his feathers. he has tons of pin feathers everywhere no wonder he let me give him scritches he needs help with them and I'm a willing participant. I don't know why he has so many pins he hasn't lost any feathers at all.

Post edited by: Tycos_mom, at: 2008/11/12 05:13

Well, I don't want you to scare him with the flash. Can you turn the flash off maybe? Mine all look at the camera really strange when I am trying to get snapshots. I have hundreds of photos and we put them on discs and I think my flock has finally gotten used to it:laugh:

I gave Cooper 2 baths so far. The first one he loved and couldn't get wet enough and the second I'm not really sure what he thought of it. I do know that once he got his feathers wet and cleaned up a bit he looked like a totally different bird.

Baxter has some pin feathers on his neck. He lets scratch his neck all the time but lately he wants his neck and feathers rubbed more than he ever has before so of course I help him out. :)

He's funny, I say to him come on up here and he says come on lets go so then I say lets go and then he comes right up I think locking him out earlier helped alot at least he's coming out now where as before there was no way. any way here's the new pictures you asked for.

Pat, what a breakthrough! I am so pleased for you and cant believe the progress you have made in such a little time. You are an inspiration for people with your hard work and patience.

The new pictures are fantastic. Gizmo looks like a completely different bird.

Karma to you Pat, I look forward to reading more.

Caroline.

Isn't it nice to see them up on top of the cage? It has to be exciting for him too. He is a beautiful bird. Cooper came out of his cage on his own one day but the next it seemed like he didn't want to. Then 2 days later he comes and goes all the time. I guess he finally figured out it was ok to be out and fun too.:)

Yes I must agree with all of you I hope that he will start coming out more now that he's been out even if its just on top of the cage its a start. I can at least work with him there. When they are in there cages you can't do anything with them that their domain and they are king or Queen of the castle in there. if they don't want you in there they sure let you know in a hurry. Even Tyco who is very good about stepping up and getting scritches now, Still won't step up from inside her cage. If she's in her cage leave her alone when she wants company she will come out then we can talk.

That is a different bird already. I am so proud of you and what you have accomplished in such a short period. He looks just beutiful and his body language is totally different , much more relaxed!

Did you keep the cockatoo from the yard sale?? Sorry of I am confused but I thought it was you who grabbed him up?

I look forward to this room so much with the rescues going on this is so fun reading the updates !!

Post edited by: cflanny, at: 2008/11/12 19:21

I did take him away and I found him a wonderful home he I wanted to keep him but he was not good with kid and he would attack my daughter when ever he got the chance. he was also not good with other birds at all so for me to keep him locked away would have been wrong. so he went to live with a very good friend of mine she is a widow with no children and she had lost her Citron crested Cockatoo the year before after 25 years so Mr Magoo is very happy with someone who is totaly devoted to him just like his previous mom was. I couldn't leave him at the garage sale but I couldn't keep him myself so I found a wonderful home for him where he will be loved and cared for for the rest of his life. Thanks for you intrest in Mr. Magoo.

Post edited by: Tycos_mom, at: 2008/11/12 21:17

Well Gizmo I starting to get the Idea that being away from his cage is not neseseraly a bad thing. Every day Iève been taking him away from his cage. He sits on my shoulder and I walk around the house with him today was the longesy I kept him away and he relaxed and enjoyed it I made waffles for my daughter while he was on my shoulder and I gave him a peice which he ate quite happily. Its still takes him a few minutes to get him to step up from his cage but thanks to Ericas advice about how she ges Cooper to step up I do the same with Gizmo it works like a charm. Gizmo also never bites me at all anymore even though I push him a little trying to get him to enjoy life he never get angry. I must say hes very easy going and puts up with allot. I think he really enjoys it when heès away from his cage its just hes been in it so long hesa little nervous about it. Ive got him to eat a few vegetables now the waffle I made for the birds I put snap peas in it and he just loved it I find if I hide his veggies he eats them no problem but if I just put them in his bowl he wont touch them. Oh Yes before I go I wanted to tell everyone that his blood work came back A1 heès got nothing at all wrong with him his calcium was on the low end of mormal and so was a few other thing in the vitimin department but thats no big deal a good diet will fix him up in a hurry and its not like he was deficient just on the low side of normal so that was great news. at least I donèt have to worry about my birds getting sick and thats the main thing he can join the flock without fear.

That is so good. He's on your shoulder already, too? Even better. I'm glad I was able to help out on the stepping up thing:) and that it worked for you too. My husband had a break through the day before yesterday with Cooper. He bought him a one of those rope perches and put in on the inside of the cage where the door is at so when the door is open he can just sit on that rope perch and look out and he does. Then later my husband went up to him and said step up and he did it!! About half the time we ask him to step up he does it willingly now:) Gizmo will probably be stepping up on his own in just a few more days:)

You and Gizmo seem to be making so many acomplishments:) ! And that is great news that he came back with a clean bill of health. I'm sure the diet you feed him will get all his levels back up where they should be too. It's funny you said you made waffles for him. We just cooked up a batch of birdie pancakes a couple days ago with seeds and dried fruit in them. Everyone loved them except for Baxter. He is such a fussy guy but I love him anyway. :P

So when will you be introducing Gizmo to the rest of your flock?

Congrats Pat on the good news about Gizmo's blood work and you will have him balanced out on his calcium and vitamins levels very soon, now like Shelia said the real fun begins but you are doing such a good job with him so far, I look forward to hearing how it continues to go with Gizmo and the rest of your flock.;) B)

I think everyones going to be fine with him I moved him into the Dining room and Fergie my Amazon had to go check him out. Gizmo was on top of his cage and Fergie landed on it. Gizmo was on one side and Fergie was on the other and neither one made a move towards the other they just sat there and looked at each other. I thought that was a very good sign they where only 3 feet apart. Gizmo does not seem to have an aggresive nature so I think that will go a long way in helping my birds accept him the only one I may have a little trouble with is Sprout my Green cheecked Conure. he thinks he can take on the world he picks fights with everyone the silly little bird he must think he's the size of an Eagle or something the way he acts sometimes. I think I'm going to slow things down with Gizmo for a little bit now that he's out in the open I'm going to just let him relax and check out his new space. I don't want him to regress so I think a few days of just checking out the other birds and seeing what new around him would be the way to go right now. he seems a little nevous and I don't want to scare him anymore than he already is.
