I'm not sure how long to like keep the fresh food in the fridge. The fruits that I dice up and make a fruit salad. Or the veggies that i cut up. I put fresh lime juice on it to help the color. So Any advice would be great

Thanks

Any fruits or vegetables that eventually change their consistency from when they were first put in the fridge should be finally dumped. As far as lime juice having an extra effect as far as length of time in the fridge, I have no idea. BUT, when veggies start to go bad in fridge, they first start to lose color so adding something to make the veggies keep their color make create a false reading.

Post edited by: Dave007, at: 2008/11/05 01:16

The majority of fresh fruits and veg's only have a fridge life after being cut of 24 hours, like Dave said by using lime juice you are just masking the color.

With things like red & green peppers I cut then into strips and put them in baggies (one days worth) and then into the freezer, each day I just take a bag out and leave it in the fridge for that day, most fruits and veg can be frozen successfully. Rinse out your baggies and reuse to save money, keep them only for your veggies or fruit.

AHHH I thought I was being clever with using the lime juice with the color. I think I'll buy some of the little snack baggies. I cooled him the 7 beans with rice and pasta. I did them up in little wraps of saran wrap and put them in the freezer. But when I thaw them out they seem mushy.

With the fresh foods I put in the fridge my rule is if I wouldn't eat it then they shouldn't eat it either. I would say that's about 24 hours on average. I do throw a lot out :( but have learned to buy little amounts.

I too seem to throw lots of fruit away.I dice it and put in the fridge.I use the frozen veg and cook before serving. I do give fresh veg aswell but I waste so much.I have not thought of freezing the fruit,I did not think the tropical fruits like papaya and mango would freeze well.Has anyone tried freezing these.

No I havn't She. I suppose I am lucky that I dont have as much waste cooking for three. I have started buying less and shopping a few times a week to make sure everything is fresh. I know this wouldnt be practical for everyone though.
