Kaedyn
What's the word on Tofu for greys? I see that it's high in calcium and the calcium phosphorus ratio isn't way off. Assuming high quantities of soy isn't an issue, I figured I'd give it a try. They might find it fun to eat and both of mine could use more calcium fortified foods. Rigel's latest bloodwork showed he had slight hypocalcemia. Which means the broccoli and other greens he consumes aren't enough.
BaxtersMom
I was just looking that up and there is a topic here on this website called "Tofu as a regular part of diet" that was pretty interesting. Look it up in the search box and hit the enter key. (I only say that cuz it took me a few months to learn I had to hit the enter key:laugh: ) I will have to learn how to add the links. Another website say it could be used as a suppliment while others think you should keep it out of a greys diet all together. Hopefully someone else will know the answer and help out but I would proceed with caution untill I knew for sure.
Kaedyn
Thanks for the reply! I should have thought to search. I have no idea why, I didn't.
Carolyn
Greys are also often said to have a greater need for calcium than other species. The truth is that they are more sensitive to inadequate levels of calcium in their bloodstream. The best sources of calcium are tofu, kale, turnip greens, and other green leafy vegetables. Calcium from spinach is poorly absorbed, but kale is an excellent source of absorbable calcium. Kaedyn
I've been feeding them a constant supply of kale and broccoli. I recently added turnip greens. The broccoli gets the most attention, but they still seem to play with it more than ingest it. I suppose I need to prove that theory by weighing them before and after a vegie picnic. B) The only calcium fortified item they don't waste is cheese, which I only give them in moderation. I figured the tofu might look a bit more like the cheese that they happily devour. TinyTimneh
I would suggest tofu (if you can the grey to eat it of course... heck, i don't even like it much myself) as an occasional thing. it has a high level of protein, and protein in excess is hard on the kidneys etc. also, i don't know if this applies to birds as well but tofu cotains a compound that is basically an estrogen hormone that can be harmful etc to people when eaten frequently. dhorje
I feed 'Taufu Fa' or known as tofu pudding to my Grey regularly, 3X a week. I scoop a tablespoon of the pudding and spoon feed my grey or sometimes I mix it with Kaytee Handfeeding formula.
SchroedersJen
Schroeder doesnt like it cold, but if its warm he will eat it with no hesitation. For kale and other veggies, I mist them with apple or grape juice and he gives them a lot more attention and eats more.
