feather pulling

Feather plucking is a common problem in African Greys. There can be many reasons for feather plucking, behavioral, psychological and/or physical.

The first thing to do is to bring your bird to a good avian vet to rule out any physical cause.

Also, have there been any changes within the last few months? Change of cage, cage location, work schedule, parrot's "out" or "play" schedule, change in family members in the house, change in feeding routine ... addition or death of an existing pet ... anything at all you can think of?

It is very important you bring him to a vet no matter what but some things that can help depending upon the cause that you can try right away without harm

- Make sure he's got lots of toys to chew up. Put an old book in his cage, those feather preening "rope" toys, pine wood ... all that sort of stuff. Of course if he has none of this don't add it to his cage all at once it may scare him :).

- Mist him with water once or twice each day, you can add a part of aloe gel to it which is supposed to help if he has dry or itchy skin causing the itch.
