Tycos_mom
I must say Gizmo is getting better everyday. He's not lunging or trying to bire at all any more. If I put my fist in the cage now he comes over and licks my nuckles. I've been reading bird books with lots of coloured pictures of bird in them and he comes right over to the edge of his cage to see the pictures he will actually kiss the bird in the picture it so cute he so funny some times. I hung some rolled up newspaper in his cage he really liked that shredded it into little tiny peices. He comes out of his cage now and stands on the door when I give him his bath so I think he really likes it. he also love to sing and dance with me. He really wants to get as close to me as he can now he grabs the shoulder of my shirt and pulls me close. he still won't step up though but I'll keep trying. I can't wait till I get him to the vet on Tuesday because I think if he saw my other birds stepping up and getting cuddles and pets he would want some also. If I could just get him away from his cage I'm sure he would enjoy it so much that he would get over being cage bound allot faster. He won't eat any veggies at all and he's not eating his pellets anymore either. I guess I'm going to have to get creative so that I can get some good nutrition into him. He likes scrambled eggs so mext time I make them I'll add so ground up pellet and some chopped broccoli mabie that will get something good into him. He loves to hang from the top of his cage by 1 toe and flap his wings like crazy. I ask him if he's showing off and he says showing off yabba dabba do I guess he learned that one from his previous owner but it so cute. anyway thats todays update I'll check in with another after I see the vet on Tuesday. bettyboop
Way to go Pat , sounds wonderful and things are really moving along ....Gizmo sounds so cute , I am glad you have each other .When will the rest of the flock meet him ? The food thing , they can be so picky .I know my guys do better with unfamiliar food if they think they are eating mine , so I always introduce new foods when they see me enjoying it .No , I don't eat pellets , so I cook with those , as I have told you before . Keep up the good work , your a great bird Mommy . M

Tycos_mom
Well I took Gizmo to the Vet this morning she said he looks in in good shape. his mouth is nice and clean and so are his ears his poop looks great under the microscope no bacteria or anything we did a blood test but that won't be back for a couple of days. she said he looks like he could use a bit more nutrition his feathers are a bit faded she said that it could also be due to stress. She gave him a vitiamin shot just to give him a little boost but she said overall he looks to be in good shape so thats good she said she would be very suprized if he has anthing wrong with him that a good diet won't cure. she said he looks great and he's active so I shouldn't worry. I told her I was haveing troube getting him to eat any kind of fruits and veggie. She said to just keep trying and eventually he might give them a try. Thats why she gave him a vitimin shot she said it would help get his appetite going. She says he's a real sweetheart and just a big bluffer she doesn't think its going to be long before he's going to want to be with me 24/7. I didn't get his wings clipped today but I think I'm going too I have to go back in when the blood work comes back so I'll get his wings and nails clipped then I didn't think there was any big rush since he will only come out of his cage to sit on the door for a few minutes. When I can get him to step up that when he will need to have his wing done. right now that isn't happening so its not a big deal at the moment

Tycos_mom
I got Gizmo to eat some broccoli this morning I thought since he seems to like to play with preening toys that hang such as news paper and rope. I decided I would try hanging a whole small stock of broccoli from one of those bird Vegetable Scewers well I no sonner hung it up and he attacked it broke off a chunk and chewed it into little bits. I'm not sure if he actually ate any of it but I figure if I do this for awhile he might start liking the taste and actually start eating them instead of just chewing them up. I hope it works do you think it will work or do you think its a waste of good veggies.
BaxtersMom
That is an excellent idea to hang brocolli that way. I would have never thought of it. :silly: It sounds like you and Gizmo are really bonding well and he seems like he is loving every minute of it. You have done wonders for Gizmo in just a very short time.
LindaMary
I think that's a great idea, Pat! Maybe you should try the same trick with other veggies, now, too, like parsley or lettuce. Thanks for the tip! You are so creative!
Tycos_mom
Gizmo is really starting to come around now he still won't let me touch his feathers. but he like it when I rub his feet and his beak. He loves to share anyrhing I'm eating I sit beside his cage door and he will come so close to eat off the edge of my plate. he doesn't mind me eating at the same time I find I'm eating veggies with salad dressing dip so he can eat the veggies plain and I can dip mine. He loves his bath everyday and gets very clownish hangin by one toe from the top of his cage with his wings open he also will sit up on the door while I bath him so I can get really close to him. I can cover him at night now but he's like a little kid at bed time and like to stall for time. He will say hello how are you? and I'll say fine how are you and he'll how are you and this goes on for a few minutes back and forth then I'll say you want a kiss night night and he will put his beak between the bars so I can give it a kiss. then he'll say kiss and I'll kiss him again. he's so funny because I know he's just stalling for a little more time. He has a fantastic vocabulary and talks in context also he ask for different things he will say I'm hungry or its cold if he's cold he's really quite amazing. I'm sure that in time he will show me everything he knows its going to be quite the adventure to learn all the thing he knows and the new thing he will learn as we go on. she
Oh Pat. What can I say. Gizmo thinks all his christmas have come at the same time. He is one happy bird. My vet phoned me the other month and asked if I would take another grey that had been left at the surgery, I had to say no because I felt I did not have the room or money to care for it and did not want my two to miss out on anything. Reading your posts I wonder did I do the right thing. BaxtersMom
Pat that is how my new amazon hangs on his cage when I mist him too. It's so funny. How long have you had Gizmo now? I think it's sweet how you guys share food. Does he come out of the cage on his own yet? And how cute that he stalls for time so he doesn't have to go nite nite:laugh: They are so much like kids. :silly:  :side:
Tycos_mom
Oh yes he comes out and sits on the door of his cage or somtimes he will sit on top of the cage. he still has tried out the swing, boing, or rope that I have hanging from the ceiling beside his cage but I'm sure he will soon he's relly starting to want me around and when I'm gone he misses me. When I came home from work the other night he got so excited to see me. I am trying to get him used to being touched. I make a game out of it like you would a child I'll say I'm going to touch your tai; and then very quickly go for a touch then I'll say the same thng with his wing or his back. He seems to enjot it and I'm hoping he will get to like being touched pretty soon.
LindaMary
I love hearing your stories about Gizmo, Pat! He sounds like such a lovable guy! And I am getting so many ideas from you on things to try with Tanner along the way ... I'm going to go update my Tanner thread and not take up yours with my details (cuz I know you'll read it anyway;) ) but I just wanted to THANK YOU for beng such an awesome birdmommy model and sharing your tricks with us! And BTW Erika: you have a new baby, too? How'd I miss this?
Tycos_mom
I don't know how many things I try with Gizmo will work its kind of try and see what happens some things work well some don't I know that when I look at bird books with lots of pictures he get very curious and will come right over and actually kiss the birds on the page. also eating with him helps alot whith getting him to try different things he loves to eat off my plate and will stay right next to me. and share food as long as there is still food on the plate. so that works good. talking dancing singing work well as he will dance and sing with me. He likes to kiss good morning and good night and actually will make the kissing noise but any other time he doesn't seem to want any kisses. the touch game I don't think I'm going to play anymore I've received 2 bite already and one of those bites he drew blood. I'm allergic to pain so I think I'll hold off on trying to touch him until I get his wings clipped and can get him out of his cage. ONe game he does like to play is peek a boo with a towel I can cover his head and un cover it with a towel over and over and he loves it comes he comes back for more evertime. I think its a good thing because If I ever have to towel him it won't scare him we play tug of war and peek a boo with the towel I picked a green towel because I figured if its a towel the same color as him he would be less afraid of it. I heard this from my vet she always uses green light blue or white towel so they have a calming effect on the parrot. I'm hoping when my daughter comes back from Seatle I will be able to towel Gizmo easily enough to hold him while my daughter clips his wings with my guidence of course. Then We will get down to some serious work with Gizmo away from his cage. Right now he is just to attached to that cage for me to have any kind of effect on him I have to get him out of there or nothing will change. He's just to cage bound. and will not leave that cage for anything. Joolesgreyuk
I know this is an old thread but I wasn't part of this forum last year. The changes in Gizmo are there for all to see, he looks in fine form these days. Does he bathe regularly now Pat? Is he your severe?
Tycos_mom
Yes he has a bath 2or3 times a week just like the rest of my flock. He's 1 of my baby's and I love him to pieces. I never even bothered to clip his wings he has always remained fully flighted even though I thought about it for awhile when it came down to doing it I didn't have the heart to do it.
