I've recently bought an African Grey(CAG) named Mini. She is 6 and a half amd has gotten to know me pretty well. Just wanted to extend my greetings to everyone

Post edited by: Laidlaw, at: 2007/04/28 09:

Guest Monique
Welcome! How long have you had your CAG? Is she your first parrot? Tell us about her and how you came to own her? I hope you enjoy the site - I do!!

Laidlaw
I've owned Mini for about 2 months now, and its been a work in progress. She's been great to have around the house, except for her ruining furniture . I bought her from a man who had owned her since birth, and it was really hard for him to let go of her. I was in lingo on wether or not i was even going to get her. Eventually he realized he had to sell her(new job), and i assured him that she would have a great home. When i brought her home, the first thing she said was "Where's Wally?" (previous pet owners name). It was kind of sad to hear that, becuase she obviously missed him. It took a couple weeks for her to get used to the new surroundings and start talking and interacting with the rest of the people in the house. I'm the only one who she really warmed up to since the move, but i encourage the rest of my family to spend time with her, so that she isn't just attatched to me. Now, she talks, plays, and likes to walk around the house. She LOVES to get the top of her head scratched. She'll sit there with her head down for 5 minutes, just wanting me to scratch her head. This was my first pet, but now that I've experience it, It's pretty much having a baby that you're raising. It's not like a dog or cat or any other bird. Its really neat to watch her interact with her surroundings, and actually say things in context, rather then random spurts of words. I'll take some pictures of her and the cage soon. estream
Aloha Ian :-) Congrats on your new family member, and welcome! I'm fairly new myself but have found everyone here to be incredibly kind and willing to share experience and overall insight - it's a great place to learn and/or simply share all those grey stories friends and family might consider you clinically suspect over :-)
Laidlaw
yeah, its nice to read other peoples experiences and compare them with my own. I find it a lot more interesting and fulfilling reading posts from actual grey owners, rather than books and articles from experts.
Guest
Yeah, what it means is, it is time consuming, but definitely worth while B) I'm looking forward to seeing the photos.
MARIR
Can I ask where everyone is from? I'd like to know how the price of babies, and breeders differ from state to state or country to country...I'm from around Pittsburgh PA, and I've seen CAG's price range from 850-1200 dollars...Is this a norm? Shaz
I looked into prices before I bought my grey. In the UK baby CAGs normally go for 500 - 800 pounds. Roughly 1000 - 1600 US dollars.

Guest Monique
I'm from South Dakota. I got my Timneh African Grey from Connecticut and he was $800, which included DNA sexing.
ZoesDad
I paid 1300 (Canadian) for my Timney. The price included polyomavirus vaccinations and 6 weeks worth of Zupreem.
MARIR
WOW....I guess no matter how much we paid, The babies are worth it at any price... I was surprised that we are so spread out, I was looking for a bird club in Pennsylvania, or West Virginia, but there is no such thing that I can find. If anyone knows of one please let me know. I asked my vet if there were any vaccines and she said she advises not to get the birds vaccinated...any ideas why not?

ZoesDad
Hi Marir, Re. vaccination, I guess it's one of those divisive issues within the veterinary community where you would find ardent camps on either side of the fence. Hell, I bet you'd find a similar polarization of thought within the ranks of avian breeders and even the general public. I know of parents who refuse to vaccinate their children and pediatricians who refuse to accept the children of parents who refuse to vaccinate as patients! Regarding why your vet doesn't believe in the use of avian vaccines, I think you'd do best to ask him/her for the reason why---and please let us know too! While I'm not a vet or an avian infectious disease specialist, I don't see the harm in prophylactic measures such as vaccination where immunologically vulnerable young birds are concerned, particularly if they are in close physical contact with other birds (as is the case in nurseries). What's the worst that can happen? You lose a few bucks. If your so inclined, have a look at this web-site for more info authored by avian veterinary researchers: http://www.birdsnways.com/articles/polyoma.htm
