Dave007
A grey goes through it's first major molt at approx 9 to 11 mts. That time line can vary a bit but those are the general figures. Greys can go through earlier molts but usually, they look worse that their first major molt which is generally even ( the major molt-the bird molts evenly on all parts of the body) Early molting is usually more ragged looking. So, it's best that you post a picture of your bird so that people can give you accurate answers concerning the bird's raggy appearance.
judygram
Nautiquejimmy, why don't you introduce yourself in the welcome room and tell us a little about you and your grey.
poochbabe
My young grey, who is currently under treatment for severe plucking issues just went into a full molt. She is on Paxil and is finally growing in tail, wing and back feathers and now her neck, upper back and chest are all losing feathers like crazy. A ton of pin feathers are there in place of the ones she is losing but she is not all that happy recently. She has been cranky and much less affectionate than she had been for many weeks. We are also in a heat wave here in the Midwest and had a few 90+ days. My house is not air conditioned but I made sure she was fully ventilated and showered every day before I left for work. Do greys get nippy and cranky when they are molting.

Janis will be 15 month in 10 days and has'nt gone through her first molting yet. What do you think? Should I worry about that? Her wings were clipped at the petshop before we found her in december 2008. Could the clipping be the explanation why it takes so long for her first molting? Thanks
judygram
Some will go thru a major molt where you will see the pinfeathers and they might look ragged and some may only go thru a partial molt that won't be as noticeable. The clipping won't have any effect on the molt. Why don't you post a picture of Janis so we can see what she looks like?
poochbabe
Can anyone tell me what kind of personality changes Greys go through when they are molting? Will new growth also molt? Ganesha is just finally getting tail, wing and lower back feathers and today I found one underside red feather from her new growth but it didn't look bitten just out with the shaft. Does that happen? judygram
Some greys will get cranky when they are molting because the new pin feathers irritate them and their skin will get a little dry from the shedding of the sheath that surrounds the new feather. Some don't like to even be touched for it is painful but others will take it in stride and you won't notice any differences. You will likely see a feather from time to time which in itself means nothing, sometimes they lose one or two from playing rough.
