Quickdood
Hello, I am trying to do some research on a second bird. I am currently looking into getting a Rose Breasted Cockatoo but I can't find too much info on them. Does anyone here have one or know about them? Are they loud birds? From what I read they seem like they are well mannered. Also I read somewhere that they produce some kind of a dust, has anyone found that to be a problem? Is it a lot of dust? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Greg
LindaMary
I don't know much, Greg, but there was a galah at the store where I got Maxi, and over the six week period when I was visiting Maxi every few days, I saw a lot of her. She was a very sweet, cuddly bird, and very quiet, actually. They are powder-down birds, like greys (I believe all cockatoos are) - and she was definitely more noticably dusty than the greys. But I was really happy to see that another lady who was visiting her regularly finally took her home, because she realy was a sweet bird - very polite! That's just my input from my very limited personal experience - I expect you'll find people here with far more intelligent things to say!

Quickdood
Hi Dave, Are they loud birds in general? As far as noise level how does it compare with an African Grey? Does the powder down really make a noticeable mess or not? If you have a Grey does it get a long with it? Does the bird let you cuddle with it/touch it a lot? Would you consider it a child safe bird? Thanks, Greg
Dave007
1--the galah--also know as rose breasted Too is the same length as a small grey but weighs a little less--approx--360 to 380 grams 2--loudness--just like most other TOOs, they can be loud but not as often during the day. 3--they get along with other species as long as the birds are introduced as babies. 4--they will bite just like other parrots but if a person purchases an adult bird, the person needs to have some experience with older birds. 5--the best galah to get for the inexperienced person is a baby. 6--In the wild, just like greys, they're scavengers. 7--Cuddling--they will do that if it's started when the bird is very young. 8--Purchasing--it's best to get them from a breeder because they originally come from Australia and aren't as popular as the large Toos. 9--Child safe--they will put up with kids a little better than greys but again, the relationsjhip has to be started when the bird is very young and the child is of the age that when he/she is told not to do certain thins to the bird, he/she listens and obeys mom or dad. 10..if you in particular is thinking of purchasing one, you should get a very young one. 11--I don't know what you mean by *powder down/ dander* making a difference. A difference in what?

Post edited by: Dave007, at: 2008/10/22 20:
Quickdood
Thanks for your reply! It was a very helpful response! As far as number 11 I think you read my post wrong, I asked " Does the powder down really make a noticeable mess or not?" For example can you see the dust on your tables and furniture. As a follow up to answer 2, since I have never really been around a cockatoo for too long, how does their noise level compare to a Grey, are they much louder, quieter, or about the same? Following up on answer 3. I plan on getting a baby Galah when my Grey is about 2yrs old. Since both birds are not going to be babies would it most likely mean the Grey would not get along with the Galah? Thanks again! Greg
Dave007
All TOOs are loud. A grey is probably one of the quietest birds in the parrot world. """Since both birds are not going to be babies would it most likely mean the Grey would not get along with the Galah?"""More than likely, 2 cages will be needed and any socializing has to be done in small steps. BUT, that general rule should apply to most medium to large sized parrots. The exact same rules apply to greys too. It's impossible to say whether 2 parrots no matter what species will get along. People have 2 or more greys and they all want their own space. Other people have 2 or more greys and they hit it off immediately. They all have individual personalities. Just like greys, they'll be dust on different things. Only the TOO and the grey develop dander. As far as furniture and dust/dander goes, it depends on how close the furniture is to the bird. If both birds are compared to each other size wise, the TOO will give off a bit more dander than the grey but that's all relative. Both have dander and both are messy. A large TOO will develop more dander than a small TOO Affection--galahs enjoy physical attention thruout the day more than greys. A TOO locked up in a cage all day creates a very unhappy bird who will pluck very easily. So, they do need the play stand around. They enjoy being carried around alot and they're less likely to zero in on your earlobes but they do like to preen hair.

Post edited by: Dave007, at: 2008/10/22 20:

Quickdood
Yeah that site is a bit disturbing, I am actually looking at a blue fronted Amazon now, may be a better fit for me.
judygram
I personally like the Galah, would have been my choice if I was to get another parrot but you do need to thoroughly research to find what would be the right fit before you committ to a specific species. That site mytoos.com is disturbing but it tells it like it is and it probably does turn some people off on toos but if it does then toos were not the bird for them anyways. Luvparrots
Thanks Pat for including that site on Cockatoos and great picture Dave. I have always wanted a cockatoo, if I can find a rescue one it will probably be my next FID. I'll have to see, thanks for sharing.
Quickdood
I still think Galahs are nice, I saw some in the pet store yesterday, from what I saw they weren't loud at all but if they can get even half as loud as the other cockatoos I saw at the pet store then I dont think they are the bird for me. All I know is I love my CAG )
