SFsailor
Hi, I just bought a CAG, and I was wondering if anyone knows if I could use pine as a perch? Are there any woods that are toxic to CAG's?
Guest
SFailor welcome to this forum - I hope you will enjoy it B) Cholla wood I've read is very good for Greys, but I personally have no experience with it, so am just passing on what I read
ZoesDad
Hi SFsailor, Check out this link for all sorts of info re. toxic woods and plants. http://www.lovebirds.ca/Safey%20for%20Our%20Avian%20Companions.htm Personally, I find that my bird likes her flexible fabric perch the most, spending most of her time on it,and apple tree branches cut to fit her cage. (If you should choose to use natural branches, just be sure that the tree from which they are cut wasn't sprayed with pesticides. Also, give the branches a good scrub down with water and a brush to remove any wild bird droppings or other contaminants.) Incidentally, my bird can entertain herself for hours through stripping the bark off of her natural perches.
Guest Monique
I think Pine is fine but she will destroy it and you will need to make new ones. That's okay - destroying things is the MOST fun thing about being a bird . Make sure no pesticides or treated wood ... nothing like that. Right now in our TAG's cage we have a plastic perch, a cement perch, a manzanita perch, and a wood dowel on a swing. Having different sizes, textures, and shapes of wood is good for your bird. It allows them to hold their feet differently and in different positions throughout the day. Our TAG also likes to perch on the edge of his bowl to eat. Coco
When i first got Coco, stripping off n destroying the perches was his only entertainment. Whenever he was kept in the cage n got bored, he wud attack the perch. Not quite sure what type of wood it was, but surely soft enuf for him to bite n strip off. i wud replace the perches occasionally but then it became a lil too troublesome n the perches were not readily available n i had to ask a carpenter to fabricate them for me everytime. I finally replaced those perches with teak wood from India. now teak wood isnt soo pricy for nothing. ;-)it sure is very strong n Coco cant destroy them anymore. But hey, i havnt deprived him of his biting n chewing urges. I get him those doggy raw hide sticks. those are small enuf for him chew n bite on n also he seems to enjoy them more than the perches !!! Anyone else tried those raw hide sticks? i've read somewhere that they are safe???
Talon
Zoesdad Thanks for the link to safe & toxic woods. It's a good tool to keep handy for those of us wanting to make things for our birds!
Guest briansmum
while we're on the subject of perches, i just got a new stand to move about the house so Brian can be where I am and it is made from sand paper.. which i didn't realise when i bought it. i know this can be bad for their feet if they are on it all the time. but just as a temp perch when he's not in the living room it should be fine right? judygram
I wouldn't let him spend a lot of time on it, maybe you could replace them with something else.
Talon
I agree with Judy. It is hard on their little feet I think.
