salsmum
Hi everyone B) I'm a 'newbee' on here so hope you're all friendly?? LOL I'm going to view a female A.G. tonight to see if we like each other LOL. She is 5 months old, likes females and supposedly hand reared/tame. What sort of questions should I ask the owner? I know I should ask the like of...Does she bite? can she fly? what sort of things does she enjoy eating/doing BUT I'm sure that all you owners would know a few more questions that I should ask so I would appreciate your help please. A repair man that came today also said I should make sure it is an A.G. and not an A.G. Timnah which he says can be quite aggressive:( so how would I know??. The owner says she does'nt talk...but she will when shes a little bit older. Hope you can help Many Thanx x
casper
Hiya salsmum, Welcome to the forum, we are all very friendly and feel free to ask as many questions as you wish. My latest grey is 5 months old and hand tame. When I went to view the bird I asked questions about the birds diet which is really important! Has the bird been fully weaned, what does it eat. Check the bird looks healthy, check the eyes and nares for any discharge. Also look around the vent area and check this is clean! The bird may come to you but there again will be nervous as you will be a stranger. Lots of owners on here have Timnehs as well as Congos and as far as I know there is no difference in aggression. Good luck and let us all know how your visist goes. Caroline
danmcq
Welcome Salsmum!! You can tell the difference between a TAG or a CAG by it's beak color and tail feathers. A TAG will have a whitish colored upper beak and a dark purple/blackish tail. A CAG will have a solid black beak and a bright red tail. Personality wise, they are both pretty much the same. Neither is more aggressive than the other and if properly raised, hand fed and socialized, they both make wonderful family members. Looking forward to hearing how things went and if you brought your new Grey home. :-)
salsmum
Thank you all for your advice and welcoming me on this site:) From when I was young I remember a 'mobile zoo' coming to the local park, my brother and I would stay at the parrot cages forever ...just taking in the sight, sounds and smells of these wonderful birds; greys and macaws mainly. I've heard of Hatching certificates and DNA proven but don't know whether I need them or how important they are if I don't intend to breed....can anyone explain? I'm not going to collect the bird tonight because I did'nt want to buy cage before bird in case bird does'nt like me But will get sorted by EOW. danmcq
Most Breeders supply a birth certficate of some sort and also offer DNA sexing so you will know 100% what sex you bird is. It's jsut a common service and courtesy. It is wise to go and visit the Grey and see if it picks you and see how he/she interacts with you. You never know until you meet them if it will be a match or not. :-)
cflanny
You also want to know what the breeder has done to already socialize baby, showers , dogs, vaccuums, bright color toys.... has she been showing baby these things so he not afraid of everything. 5 Months coming from a breeder right?? DNA testing is personal choice the only medical reason to know would be for you to expect eggs eventually and educate yourself on eggbinding, this is when the egg does not come out succesfully and is a serious risk if you are not educated on how to help your bird. 5 month old is just a baby and he/she will adapt to you just fine!! It should be fully weaned( or close) at this point and able to eat lots of goodies. Welcome to the forum and good luck hope you fall head of heels today ! oh and your repair man was totally wrong if anything Timnehs are more social and less fearfull but this is not proven and most say its about the same. Timneh are indepentent from parents in the wild about 6 months before a CongoAG which they say may play some part.
salsmum
Sorry cflanny, no not from a breeder...private seller. She says her small dog keeps jumping at the cage and shes worried if parrot gets out the dog will eat it! I will find out if 'shes' [owner unsure] sociable around everyday stuff. EFGriffith
Ooohhhh, congratulations on bringing home baby! Be sure to tell us the story of bringing "her" home, figuring out a name, acclimating her... I get excited when I see people bringing home new little ones and coming to this forum. I tend to think most of the people who would come to an online forum specifically made to chat about their bird(s) are the kinds of people who are going to be great pet-parents. I'm so happy for you =)
Luvparrots
Congratulations on finding your CAG. I'm getting a Timneh (TAG) in mid-November so have read alot about them. The Congo is also larger than the Timneh, which for me is a plus, little things are my thing. I hope all goes well with your first visit. Please let us know all about your new friend once you get her home.

EFGriffith
Here's my two cents as a new Grey mom! I'm learning that it takes longer for Greys to trust than lots of other animals, so don't rush into training or anything that might be unpleasant. The members here are helping me to see that the first order of business seems to be gently loving your bird until a tight bond has been established and giving the bird time to adjust to its new surroundings and trust you. salsmum
Well quick up-date everyone, I have seen the beautiful birdy and just got back! She let me stroke her foot first, then her wing side, then finally her neck:woohoo: so I think that it's looking quite good on first meet...slowly and gently is the way forward. I feel really privalidged that she put that much trust in me already and I'm still gushing:woohoo: She has a foot that turns sideways where mum bird sat on her when she was young:ohmy:but she seems healthy otherwise. The young lady owner said shes had her since saturday and although she tells me her dog won't leave parrot alone she's asked that she speaks to all the family to see if getting rid of bird is only option...so although I was a bit dissapointed not to be bringing her home tonight I want the owner to be comfortable in her mind that we will love her as much as she does......fingers crossed she makes up her mind soon

salsmum
Hiya, Has anyone on here had a parrot with sideturning foot? [where mum sat on it when small] Do they ajust o.k. or will it always have problems with balance?
EFGriffith
Not quite, but I met the sweetest little baby whose mom had actually bitten its toes off as a newly hatched youngin'. Maybe it was the dad, not sure... Obviously it wasn't able to use perches or anything, but it hobbled around the bottom of the perch stand the other birds were using, had food available, and loved cuddling more than any of the others. So even if sideturny-foot doesn't have the best balance (which I'm not sure about), just remember there's a perfectly good little heart in there! =) I can't help but remember all the time what a sweetie the little one with no toes was. Ajilon
I have a friend that has a cockatoo with both feet turning in. He perches just fine and without any problems. It just looks a little funny. If it's something from a young age, he'll learn to function with it. Because of that, I'd be leary to trim his nails too much. Maybe just file the sharp points off. Dave007
"""""Has anyone on here had a parrot with sideturning foot? [where mum sat on it when small] Do they ajust o.k. or will it always have problems with balance? """" More than likely, it won't have problems in the future. You're only talking about a foot that's somewhat aimed outward. It'll just take longer to catch up to what the other birds are now doing. They will adjust. Splayed legs are a whole different story. The bird can't stand at all. When they're extremely young, some vets will construct splints for the entire leg/legs. There's birds out there that are missing a complete food and they adjust too.
