retronut
ive read a lot about what to feed a grey, and how much and how often. it sounds simple to get a big list of fruit and veg, chop it up and serve with pellet or seed mix. i dont have a grey yet and im already stressed about feeding one, lol! id find it really interesting to hear how you all go about the feeding process. no big lists of good food, just a description of how you prepare your greys dinner and what and how you decide to feed them from day to day. also how many times a day do you refresh the dish and how much does a grey eat? thanks to anyone who takes the time to reply!

Post edited by: Talon, at: 2008/10/13 20:

hoodoowoman
I keep a small amount of seed around all day-but just enough so I can see when/if it's being eaten. I notice he usually takes a few bites while still covered in his cage-he likes a little nibble first thing. When he moves to his perch in the living room he gets a couple of nuts-sometimes almonds. I'll hand feed pignolias to him, but they have to be limited-he'd eat till he exploded if I let him have those all the time. In the early afternoon he usually gets fruit or veg and at night when I feed the dogs he likes a little bit of cheese or some beans. If I have a frito or something like that-he'll usually get one of those too. I eat a lot of organic food, and he likes a nibble of this or that. I know that sounds pretty relaxed, but he's doing well, and I'm eating better too since I will just cut up a small apple for both of us or share some nuts, etc. I do limit the fritos junk stuff (for both of us). Oliver is 8 and when I first got him he was a seed only, mostly sunflower eater. He hates pellets of any type, puffs, etc. but likes his veggies (now) and loves fruit. Confession: A lot of times I'll just buy a variety of human grade seeds from the health food store-he gets a good variety and it's cheaper than buying a good grade parrot mix that is half wasted. I don't buy salted...and I do buy a lot of nuts, etc in the shell because he enjoys cracking them and digging out the nuts. I also buy dried peppers in bulk that way-much less expensive than petsmart. We BOTH go nuts over a little pack of multicolored peppers. Really, a lot of what is good for Ollie is good for me too-so it's a win win situation.
Jane08
We give them fruit and veg for breakfast and some seeds that have been soaked in water overnight. Then they are in their cage for the day and get dried seeds/fruit/pellets. When we come home they have a hand feeding of formula or sweet potato, about 3 teaspoons which does both of them. At dinner time they have veggies/soaked seeds and also a bit of what we are having for dinner. They then have a bedtime snack of pellets or a few seeds, very small portion. MsTrippi
My baby gets Natural Zupreem pellets (he didn't like the fruity kind) in his cage all day. I usually put about 2 tsp in at a time so that I don't have to dump a lot when I give him fresh food (every morning). Every morning he goes to his playstand to eat breakfast. He gets a Kaytee pasta blend with fruit (It comes packaged, you just add water and heat it). I sometimes add vegetables to this. At night he gets the Kaytee vegetable pasta blend with frozen vegetables heated. Every other day I give him a seed mix, about 2 tsp. He also eats a variety of table food including tofu, spaghetti, bread, and whatever else we're eating. He likes to share In addition to this I sometimes cook up sweet potato for him. I tend to stick to frozen vegetables because I know they are picked and frozen right away. (Always get grade A) (Plus it's way easier) I also give him 2-3 Nutriberries every night in his Zupreem bowl. My vet said his diet is "ideal." Not to brag...Yippee!B) I am actually bird sitting right now for a lady who does the coolest thing. She buys party trays for her birds. The veggies and fruit are all sliced up, washed, and ready to go. If you can afford it every week or so, I think that's so clever! I think the easier your feeding routine, the easier it is to keep up a good one. And to answer the other question- if it's a wet/fresh food (veg, fruit, pasta) I only leave it out 2 hours. Some say 4 hours, but I like to play it safe.
BaxtersMom
I start of with giving Baxter pellets in the mornings. He always gets pellets but along with the pellets he gets something else. Sometimes it is seeds or nuts, other days it is oatmeal, or egg, sometimes fruits or veggies. I keep pellets available all during the day for him to snack on. In the evenings he usually gets some kind of vegetable that I am having with dinner. But I usually keep pellets in his cage all day long. I have to dump them out and refresh a couple times a day depending on how messy things get. :silly:
Luvparrots
Ana Grey always has pellets and a variety of seeds in her cage. She is a night time eater of the things in her cage because she spends most of the day out on top of her cage, on a side cloth perch, or in the living room on her playstand. At breakfast Ana Grey always has a corn muffin, she loves them and then oatmeal about twice a week, full grain cereal a couple of times a week, and eggs once a week. During the day there are lots of different fresh fruits and vegetables offered a couple of times of day. Right now Ana Grey is into fresh squash slices. Treats are almonds, walnuts, pine nuts and pecans. Quite frankly, because I live alone and so don't do alot of cooking, I have been eating very well, thanks to Ana Grey! In the morning he has veg and later in the afternoon he has his fruit.Sometimes inplace of the veg he will have scrambled egg or a rice, bean and veg mix. He has a taste of what I am eating during the day as well as a few nuts, almonds, wallnuts now and again peanuts, not in shell. He loves fish and chicken which he has when I am eating it.
