Anmlhggr Posted October 9, 2008 Share Posted October 9, 2008 I'm buying a cage that would fit a Macaw since I'm hoping to get one sometime in the future. I've been looking online craigslist, ebay...etc. etc. and I would like you to take a look at this link and tell me if you think this one is to small. It's a good price and it looks big to me, but pictures can be deciving. Also I know that my new family member wouldn't be spending very much time in the cage - just like Woody doesn't spend much time at all in his so I know that I don't need a monster 3,000 USD cage :unsure: , but I would like that my new baby could be in comfortably and so that it wouldn't be cruel if I was unable to get him out for whatever reason....know what I mean? Thanks in advance!! :laugh: http://cgi.ebay.com/30-PARROT-CAGE-BIRD-cages-birds-perch-stand-0119-122_W0QQitemZ310089612725QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item310089612725&_trkparms=39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A15%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 Also, if this one is too small (as it very well might be) what demensions to you recommend? Do you have pictures of what your macaws cages look like?

Post edited by: Anmlhggr, at: 2008/10/08 20:03 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Tycos_mom Posted October 9, 2008 Share Posted October 9, 2008 I think that you have to have a cage that the bird can open his wings wide and have room to turn around with his wings open. I would say you need a cage that is at least 36"x40"x 64"high not including a play top I have a huge Macaw cage for my Grey this is what mine looks like but there are lots of different style. The one your showing looks like the bars woud not be strong enough a Macaw could snip through them like wire cutters. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
MommaFawkes Posted October 9, 2008 Share Posted October 9, 2008 Ive heard a macaw cage needs to be at least 40x40, and thats just to be comfortable. There are amazing deals on ebay for big cages! Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Anmlhggr Posted October 9, 2008 Author Share Posted October 9, 2008 Woody's cage is similar to the one you posted Tycos_mom, but I need one for Mr. Superbeak! Since I think I'll be rescuing I know that most of the rescues don't come with a cage, and I'm looking for an affordable one (which just means more money to spend doing tests at the vet and buying toys! ) So far, I haven't found many helpful websites regarding Macaws and cages. :ohmy: Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
lovemyGreys Posted October 9, 2008 Share Posted October 9, 2008 As Tiff says 40 x 40 would be the minimum cage size i would put a macaw in.I cant find my tape measure but i'll measure mine for you & let you know Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Anmlhggr Posted October 9, 2008 Author Share Posted October 9, 2008 Lovemy, That would be excellent! Please keep us updated and send pics when you can:) I would love to take a look! I am assuming you got him em right? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Anmlhggr Posted October 9, 2008 Author Share Posted October 9, 2008 He got deleted and relisted. Unfortunately I'm not getting him :( His owner wants 700 for him and the cage, but she lives 4 hours away, so the drive there and back, plus the new bird exam when I get home will run about 350.00 + so all in all I would be about 1200 which is a bit more than I would want to pay right now (car winshield just broke tonight after work..BAH! :angry: ) I so hope he finds a good home...he seems like such a darling... {Feel-bad-0002006A}

Post edited by: Anmlhggr, at: 2008/10/09 04:38 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
BMustee Posted October 9, 2008 Share Posted October 9, 2008 A parrots cage should be at least the width of one and a half of it's wingspand. Macaws should be in at least a 40'w cage...with bigger being better. The cage you posted from ebay is smaller than my CAGs cage. Her cage is I believe 36'w without the seedguards. Anmlhggr Posted October 9, 2008 Author Share Posted October 9, 2008 I went to measure Woody's cage and it seems my tapemeasure has dissapeared.... so I will be stopping by walmart tomorrow to get another because I'm actually not sure on the deminsions of his cage. The one from Kings that is on Craigslist (that thread is in the grey forums) is very, very tempting.... Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Tycos_mom Posted October 13, 2008 Share Posted October 13, 2008 I wish You live in eastern canada there Is a 30yr old Greenwing Macaw in Toronto that needs a new home apparently she is extreanly sweet and loving. goldn1 Posted October 16, 2008 Share Posted October 16, 2008 I'm sorry the macaw didn't work out. Keep looking on Craigslist and on Petfinders too. I fell in love with a gorgeous blue and gold on Petfinders but didn't have the available cash they wanted for him. A week later a lady I had met at a bird fair that does rescue emailed me this sad, sad story about a bird she had just gotten in. I had a feeling it was him, turned out.....IT WAS, and she wanted us to have him. She had no idea I was already in love with him. She's working with me on the adoption fee because she knows me and we're picking him up in two days. In one year we've gone from "you want a WHAT?" to having a grey, a blue crown conure, a green cheek, a cockatiel and now a gorgeous blue and gold macaw.......lol. We're suckers for sad stories, but he's going to be our last one for a while......unless I move the living room furniture out to the garage! lol I've finally hit my MBS limit! {Feel-good-000200BB} Anyway the point was, keep looking.......just when you're about to give up the bird you were meant to have may drop in to your lap. And he/she will be a very lucky bird. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
judygram Posted October 16, 2008 Share Posted October 16, 2008 I'm sorry you lost out on the B&G macaw Amberly, I know you really wanted him but you will find another bird soon, sometimes when one door closes another one opens so keep your chin up and keep looking. :cheer: Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Ajilon Posted October 16, 2008 Share Posted October 16, 2008 I looked at the cage you posted from ebay. I wouldn't get it. I bought a similar cage from the same seller 6 months ago. I've already had to replace it. It was the worst quality cage I've ever seen, was damaged and I had to fight the seller for a partial refund. The bars weren't very thick at all and bent very easily. The welds looked like a 3 year old welded them and broke without any effort. I've learned the hard way, you get what you pay for. A $100 cage isn't going to last you. Keep your eyes peeled on CL. You can pick up some great second hand cages for a fraction of the cost. However, for a macaw, don't settle for less than thick bars and a heavy cage. You'll regret it when the bird eats your house from having escaped. As for size, at least 60" high, 40 wide and no less than 36" deep. Bigger if you can find it. A baby macaw is ACTIVE and will use every centimeter of space. Good luck and keep us posted. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Anmlhggr Posted October 16, 2008 Author Share Posted October 16, 2008 Whoa, thanks for letting me know, I'll flag him as my beware list seller. I'm actually picking up a cage (or rather 'going to look') at a cage on Friday, the lady had a cockatoo in it, but she just got a new cage. So hopefully it will be good, I'm thinking about adopting this DYH amazon.... B) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
